Master Server Appears to be Down

by David Wyand · in Site Feedback · 03/01/2004 (5:59 am) · 11 replies

Greetings!

I've been receiving emails this past weekend from people stating that the Master Server has been down for quite a while. It seems they felt I had some control over them because of my Master Server Monitor at www.gnometech.com. I've asked them to contact the game developer or to come here for an answer.

That aside, as of 9:30am EST, it appears the Master Server is still down. I just thought someone would like to know. :o)

It would seem it's back up now...

Aye, the green light on the Gnometech tower is a good sight.

You guys may want to invest in a network management solution to page someone after hours when the master server decides to take a break.

The master server is really for development purposes only. You should not be making business critical implmentations based on our sample master server. We don't really want a leash for the master server unless it is turned into a money making service that can pay its way.

Greetings!

Thanks for the information, Jeff. I wasn't aware of the distinction.

The interesting thing is that it appears Orbz and Think Tanks are using the GG Master Server for just that -- a commercial implementation.

For Orbz, it was decided way back in December of 2002 (when Orbz shipped) that we would use the GG master server because we didn't expect to get all that many people playing (compared to Tribes and other games that used the technology in the past). Over the last 15 months or so, the Master Server has only been down two or three short times and has served us well.

That said, we are developing a new Master Server for GravRally and will be moving Orbz over to the new solution when it's ready.

If you need a stable master server, comparable to the features of GameSpy and Steam, contact me: phero@mindforce.nu and we could discuss the features and services you need.

Okay, so Are we supposed to write our own master server or what? I am curious about this.

This thread is dead. Better to start a new one than revive three months old with an only semi-OT post.

Anyway... GG provides a master for use with Torque games. Go ahead and use it. We don't charge or anything. All the current Torque games use our master server.

Since its just brought back to live, I might as well keep it alive by asking my questions. No need to start a new thread and refer to this one.

What if I want release a free game?

How can I run a masterserver of my own incase this is a problem?

Answer: TNL

You can release a free game. We don't track master server usage by game. It's very unlikely any game you write, even a vastly succesful one, is going to significantly tax the master server. Tribes1 and Tribes2 used a single master server each.

There are also some free master server implementations.

If you're really worried, buy a license to TNL. It has a master server implementation.

Trust me on this, though - this is really not worth the hassle.
