Modelling Contest

Hi, I think I have an idea...
It seems that many people needs some sort of game pack for their games. I am willing to fork out $100 as part of the prize money (hope more people will follow) and hope that GG will organise a modelling contest. Each contest will have a theme each time (army, fantasy, etc) and GG will pick the best 6 3D characters. To enter the contest, the modeller needs to submit the 3D characters ( with weapons and animation included) but without the max source file, for GG to access based on preset criterion.
The 6 winners share the prize money upon submitting the max source file to GG. GG can sell the characters & max source file as game pack, with the option of sharing 20% of the profit to the original modeler. For the people who put up the prize money, gets to have the characters and 3d max source file of the 6 winners. This will encourage interested people to fork out $100 and snowball the prize money and then gets 6 winning characters, than to buy the models later at a higher cost.
To give an example.
60 pay GG $100 each. Total price money is $6000.
GG organises the contest and states the entry criterion.
The best 6 characters (with weapon and animinations done) submitted, accessed by GG, wins.
The winners has to submit his source file to GG in order to claim the price money of $6000/6=$1000.
The 60 people who provides the price money and the organiser GG, gets to keep the winning 6 characters and source file. Thereafter, only GG has the right to sell the characters with the source file included, as game pack and may sell at, say, $50 for each character. Buying all 6 will cost $50 x 6 = $300. If GG so decides, the original modeller may get a 20% share of the sales from the game pack.
If the response is good, GG can organise another modelling contest with a different theme.
Of course this idea needs further brainstorming and fine-tuning. What do you say?

It would also be good to charge say $20 instead of $100. You'd probably endup getting more money from it. I'd also split 80% the money between the top 4 and give the rest to the organizers of the contest.
Not sure why GG hasn't done any contests. It's a good way to bring people in. Heck, if the prize was simply to win one of the games GG has in it's repetoir I'd be in. Then they don't even need the people investing and after say 5 competitions they could have a GG Character/Environment/What-ever Competition Pack. Then say each winning artist from the comps would get $1 from each sale of the pack. It's not a lot of money for the artists I suppose but free games are nice ;).

Contests like this are a great idea, how-ever you have to consider the amount of time it takes for an artist to complete the project. Modelling and animating a character is a lot of work, so if you were to limit it to just modelling, that would be better. It would also be good to charge say $20 instead of $100. You'd probably endup getting more money from it. I'd also split 80% the money between the top 4 and give the rest to the organizers of the contest.

Does anyone know how much a modeler gets paid (normally) for a model with animations of some sort? (Say walk, run, die, wave) That might bring a light to how much "reward" a contest would need to have for it to be worth their time or to attract the talent.
I also think it would be worth while to release the characters as a "free for torque owner"'s models (maybe only in .dts form) Would help lone wolves such as myself get my demo together or maybe help the RW project advance.
01/30/2004 (2:37 pm)
I agree that the animating of a character is alot of work, but the point of the contest (as I see it) is for the end result to have usable models. Being I don't own gmax it would make it useless for me to either buy the content pack or help fund the contest.Does anyone know how much a modeler gets paid (normally) for a model with animations of some sort? maybe I shouldn't use the words "game pack"; I am not talking about using gmax.
To suit different people, GG can sell the characters with, and without the source files. Those who bought the characters with the source files, can modify freely to change the looks.

Are there any modelers out there who would be up for a contest?

So Joe, what kind of prizes would make it worth your while?
#8
01/30/2004 (5:15 pm)
Why only do characters? There are some of us who can't model organic objects very well, but can make nice man-made objects.
#9
Sounds like a good idea. But I'm no modeller.
01/30/2004 (7:02 pm)
I suppose that would be the theme of the comp. Make a character, Make a vehicle, Make a house (with furnishings) etc.Sounds like a good idea. But I'm no modeller.

I don't think many modellers would buy the torque engine code, since they basically do modelling. But if GG decides to organise the contest, modellers who are non-torque owner should be plenty and keen (i hope).
Joe,
We will be glad to have you in the contest :)
Lets voice our preference for the first contest theme. It can be under Sports, Fantasy, Military, Jungle, Adventure, etc. I think it will be easier for GG to make the decision.
How much price money is the best amount for us to put up if the theme is selected?

I am not sure what sort of prize would make it worth it.. 60" plasma screen TV?
Seriously though. A good prize might inspire some people that do not frequent GarageGames to come over and check out what is going on. My personal goal would not be winning, but meeting new people and seeing the community grow.
Good prizes that might spark some interest --> A new super duper video card. Sortware (copy of photoshop, 3dsMAx, Maya) etc.. are pretty good incentives (although they would be pricey. A new Wacom.. A Wacom cintiq, Z-brush, Deep Paint, I am thinking that some cool art tool would be better than cash.
A few more thoughts. Having it rigged and ready in game is a tall order and may discourage people that are working with the Unreal engine or other engines. I would like to see some of the people that are really good over a planetquake come and check out the scene here. As prestige might be as big of an incentive as a prize, having some sort of prestige based prize might be cool.
So, if a cool model wins, it gets rigged and set up to run in the Torque Game Engine and becomes a featured asset in a demo (with the author given credit) and that demo is used for marketing purposes?
More thoughts...
Instead of a broad 'genre', it might be cool to do it like the challenges that some of the 3d sites hold. A theme is chosen. Instead of 'fantasy', something specific like 'breathing apparatus' or 'preparing for war' is put up. It is the model and the interpretation of the theme that are factors in deciding a winning entry.
It is hard to judge a model against a character. In most of these contests, they are broken down into vehicle, character, and environment (which includes buildings and other environmental items).
To extend this idea.. it would be cool to have small teams get together to work on the a small demo. It woulld not necesarily need to be a playable game, but just be a small vignette that is judged on the quality of the graphics. Might make for some pretty impressive looking and inspirational levels to check out.
Not sure what GG's take on this will be, but I like the discussion and I like where this could go. Again, my personal goal would be the artist community at GarageGames growing and becoming more vibrant, and anything that has the potential of doing that, is, in my book,a good thing.

GG is up for some creative contests - objectives: lets see it builds our artist community, creates useful new product (GG usually offers the very generous 35/65 royalty rate on exclusive content) and quality art content for indie game developers.
Questions:
1) What is the right contest entry fee? $25, $50, $100 it will effect the total prize money - depending how many artists can afford the entries fees and enter.
2) I can always go after some contest sponsors and find some cool prizes - in addition to the entry fees, I like Joe's ideas what other prizes would get people up for the work involved in building contest entries?
3) How long do you need (We can set an arbitrary date or we can announce the award at IGC in the fall if necessary, but what is realistic)?
4) Rigging, boned (in an artistic sense), what level is doable?
5) I like the theme idea - what kinds of characters would have the most interest?
6) Any concerns about giving up IP ownership of the art? (Only way we can relicenese the art - we could grant back limited usage rights to the artist - sometimes contests that will eventually benefit the sponsors come across as self-serving for those running the contest, but GG would be interested in this to recognize talented artists and build content for the indies games and hopefully be a repeatable event).
7) Who is on board to help cross promote (don't think I don't know you call this pimping) this contest to other artist communities?

Just a note, this might get better community response if it were not in the Private SDK forums..

Thank you for the response ;)
question one
Hmm, why make the graphic artists pay any entry fee? Maybe, I wasn't clear in the first place ;-)
The prize money can be put up by non-graphic artist as well. Whoever pools up the prize money will get, let say, 6 winner characters and source, which will be cheaper if he were to wait til GG puts the winning characters for sales after the contest. I hope this will attract more sponsor.
question three
I am thinking the contest can last for 3-4 months. So that in a year, we will have at least 2 contest.

I like the whole idea of having contests of this type. However, I tend to be against diluting our existing community with members of other communities who may bring a lot of baggage with them, or who may come for the contest and then leave with the prize, never to be seen again. On the other hand, it would be nice to see our community grow, because new people bring fresh ideas. More people also bring more money to GG and the contest. So that's a bit of a conflict for me.
I think a maximum entry fee of $50 would be fine. That is the maximum I would pay to enter, because I have 7 kids to feed. :)
It sounds like some good ideas are coming out. I like the idea of categorizing the contests. Not everyone can model, and especially animate, characters. Not everyone can model vehicles, architecture, and other things either. Even in the "corporate" game development world, and even the motion picture world, modelers tend to be categorized by specialty.

Gaining Community Members:
I agree with Joe's comments about diluting and adding a lot of extra noise to our already excessively noisy forums, if this contest is opened outside of the community then there needs to be a lot of thought put into making
certain that we find a way to keep these guys here. This will probably mean developing a really good PR front, that there is a lot you can learn here and to make people feel welcome and that this is a great place to be if you want to break into the industry.
If we cannot figure out a way to keep these guys around then in all honesty we shouldn't probably open it up to them. Especially since it might rub our
existing artists the wrong way if they see a bunch of lemming roam in for a contest, steal a lot of hype, and then take off.
Entry Fee:
Having artists pay can work two ways. The first is that it can keep a lot of
artists, especially those in our community, from participating since
everyone here is pretty much dirt poor. On the flip side though having
people pay to enter will definately help in making things easier to judge
since only serious entries would pay the fee.
If you have projects donate the money in this might work better at giving
everyone a fair chance to enter and draw in outside interst into the
community. The problem here though is that whatever the artists develop will
probably have to go back to the community for free (ie. add it to the
Torquek SDK) and it would have to be on a subject matter that the majority
of the community members are doing (ie. WW2 FPS, Sci-Fi Alien Hunter FPS,
etc.) other wise this contenst, and sponsoring it, is of no use to them as a
whole.
Prizes:
Cash will offer the greatest incentive for people to work hard and do good.
But it also requires one of the two parties (Projects or Artists) to part
with it, and as I said before we are all cheap and cannot really afford much
so I do not know how well this will fly. Prizes from sponsorship could be a
good idea too. Perhaps some Video Cards, Torque SDK, T-shirts from
development studios, games, etc.. Maybe a combination of this would work out
best, thus allowing us to have multiple winners.
Tasks:
I agree with Joe that there should be specific tasks given. Areas where we
would get high amounts of interest from would be Modeling (characters,
objects, weapons, vehicles), Texturing and Hammer/Quark. Animation would be
a nice subject to have, but I don't think that there is enough talent in the
community as a whole to really give this a good run for its money.
The tasks themselves will need to be very specific in what people will have
to produce as well as the requirements for proper submission (ie. no
characters above 3000 polys, no weapons above 400 polys, 1 512x512 texture
(or smaller) for your characters, etc.).
Also how many submissions do you allow people to enter? How do we stop
people from using prior art or swiping something off of the net? Things like
this also need to be seriously considered because there are unfortunately a
lot of guys out there who won't stop at cheating to win, especially when
money is involved.
Judging?
If we want things to go smoothly it might be best to have a first prelim
review to make certain that the quality is there that is needed in the
submission and to also ensure that it meets the requiements of the task
itself. After that picking the winner could go one of two ways: if this is
sponsored by projects, let the sponsorers decide who wins. If this is
sponsored by the Artists, then GG will have to create a group of impartial
judges to review this stuff.
Those are my two cents on the subject based on what I have been able to
read. I hope that something can start up and go through.

One of contests at CGChat was overseen by Ensemble Studios, where Emsemble basically said they were looking for new talent and that by entering this competition you had a chance at landing a job there (and one of the entrants, although not the winner of the contest, did). While I doubt this is a feasible option for an indie team, it really brought in the crowd (but only temporarily). But hey, if BraveTree was willing to do that you'd be sure to have at least one entry right here ;).
Cross promoting a contest that you have to pay for could be tricky because there are quite a few sites that run their own contests that are free (and moderators might not want to lure people away from their own contests). A collaberation with one of those sites might be better. Offering games from GG as prizes for those free contests would help promote GG too.
As far as prizes go, like I said earlier, I'd be happy with a game from GG although that might not bring in artists from other communities.
Here are some more ideas (some may not be great but I'm just throwing them out there):
1. A Mercury membership to fileshack
2. A membership to www.3d.sk (WARNING: There is nudity on that site but it's great for references; e-mail or post here if you want me to remove that link)
3. High end video card
4. A really cool prize would be one of the Gnomon Workshop artist DVD's that they have. They're expensive enough that a lot of people won't buy them, but there are quite a few people interested in them.
5. Contest winners get a special icon next to their name when they post in the forums.
6. Contest winners have their models placed in content packs sold by GG, with the winner getting a mild amount of the profits (I think this would work best with multiple contests)

I'd be down with a GG contest. I've been following the contests at CGChat for almost a year now and there are some obvious trends. The larger the size of the project the less likely people are to finish. Projects that last more then a month are probably a bad idea. For the prize to bring in new people, it has to be one heck of a prize. Some of the free contests have prizes that could be valued at around $100.One of contests at CGChat was overseen by Ensemble Studios, where Emsemble basically said they were looking for new talent and that by entering this competition you had a chance at landing a job there (and one of the entrants, although not the winner of the contest, did). I'm with LFoster on most of the things he wrote. I mostly worry about cheating.
Also WHAT constitutes cheating? Do we allow multiple persons to work on project? If so how do you judge that againts single person projects. Those are just a couple of things I would like to see addressed.
WE definatly need to set a theme.
I would also be willing to donate to the prize or register as an entry provided the cost is no more 50$. I think thats kinda high for most but who knows that might be reasonable. No higher for sure.
I would like to see prizes range from Cash Prize for the best to maybe novilties for the runner up. But mostly I would like to see all the art work put into a content pack that maybe would cover several types of engines and sold, and the money's to be used for further contest prizes in the future. They don't have to be that expensive and make it attractive to anyone not just Torque users (although we are the only ones that count!).
I would also be willing to provide services to make that happen. (rigging and exporting)
I figure I should get my little bit in.

I think this might be a good idea. I always encourage new people to get started and we could attract not only established artists but up and comings too. Or get to see if there anybody out there who has real hidden talent.I'm with LFoster on most of the things he wrote. I mostly worry about cheating.

1) Move the thread to a place where artists without the SDK can see it! (please).
2) If youre going to have multiple contests with different themes.. why not have some form of "bidding" for the contest. Let me explain that a bit.
Suppose a team needs some good models, at least for testing. It'd be cool if they could "sponsor" an artist contest, which they get non-exclusive rights to use the contest entries in thier game.
That'd serve a double purpose of giving something to the people who sponsor (useful content) and give something to the guy who does the work and wins.
Of course, that is kind of like a work-for-hire thing where you get loads of people to do the work and pick the best.. but hey.. why not? :)
I'd sponsor a competition if youre going to have more than one big one. Hell, I'll put something into a prize kitty..
