Beginner needs some advice

by Neo Anderson · in General Discussion · 08/31/2001 (6:50 pm) · 2 replies

I'd really like to get into making computer games.
It's been something I've wanted to do for a while, but after buying several books and packages that claim to help you learn to make a game, I've found nothing that helps. Could anyone tell me if there are any good resources on the web or a book that is good for learning from basically the ground up. I've had one semester of VB and 2 semesters of C++ programming, just for some background info.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Han

This is gonna sound like a sales pitch...

Spend the 100 bucks for v12.

This site, in conjunction with the v12 license/code, will take you and AWFULLY long way, especially of you already "get" C++.

You get to see what a good engine looks like in code, it's pretty well documented and laid out, and this community is great for sharing knowledge.

Another college student lookin to make games... welcome to the club... if your not even in college yet, your years ahead of me. I, personally, am saving up to licence the engine, as i am the main force in my company... Ive bought various books, and none ever came to much use (except java in a nutshell and the c++ programmers reference) I think the community really can help you more than any book... I know i like hearing the opinions of joe average on sites like these and then weighing them and makin a decision ( what engine to use, ect) My advice is, get a job on campus ( im a web dev boy here) and work the 20 hours and front the cash for this engine... thats my goal!
