I see lots of max 2 dts file formats based on version of max, but is there a gmax2dts conversion utility?

Hmm theres alot of coders here i bet why doset the community just make its own modeler/mapper and actually make it pretty cool. It could come as separate or with the engine... do you think its a possibility?

To develop something like this you will need to know what features it needs to have, so right there you will need to do a lot of focus group testing. Next up you will need to impliment all those features, this will take a lot of time and testing to get it done right and to be honest who wants to take their time away from making a game? Lastly you now need to convince the artists that they should use this tool over their prefered 3D application, this will be a hard sell because you will be competing against companies that have a lot of R&D as well as years of development under their belts to ensure work flow and productivity in their applications is optimized.
If you feel that its something that you and some like minded people want to do, please go ahead.

Its a possibility, but whether or not its worth anyone's time is another question. Correct me if I'm wrong, but can't you use the exporters that already exist for gmax, and import them in to other conversion tools that do have dts exporters like Lightwave, gamespace, ect.

Technically, probably.
But if you're going that route, why not just download a pirated copy of 3DS Max? Both methods are illegal. One's illegal in terms of EULA licensing and the other is illicit software.
