Time wasters... or Learn from the oldies.

I just spent some time setting up some old BBS Doors (The online games of the late 80's early 90's). They are some good examples in many cases of simple concepts that gave complex / addictive gameplay.

If you want to take a look you can go to the following URL:
The Widow Maker BBS

Games currently working:

Barren Realms Elite
Falcon's Eye
Falcon's Honor
Global War
The Arcadian Legend
L.O.R.D - Legend of the Red Dragon
Operation Overkill
Terra Firma
Planets: The Exploration of Space
Arrowbridge
Arrowbridge II
TradeWars 2002 (unregistered)

There are several doors that have become freeware that I'm looking into, and a few others that I'm trying to track down the last known distributer.

If you know of any (or even better have registration information for) that you think others might find interesting. Let me know and I'll try to add it.

Figures... after I posted this I found several problems... I think most of those are fixed now :) So if you want to try again... come on in.

You can either use the above link.

Or you can download mTelnet at ozone.eesc.com/

Download the latest version, extract it and run the mt32.exe

press alt-D to get to the "dialer"
'F1' to add a new entry

Name: The Widow Maker BBS
Address: thebest.mine.nu
Emulation: ANSI

When Registering... Screenlength will be '24'

If you press alt-enter you can run in fullscreen mode to get the true "retro" feel.

Once you get to the BBS at the login prompt enter 'new' to log in as a new user, it will ask you for a bunch of info. You only really need to give Name, login, and password.

Once you login to the BBS and get the first menu Type D [enter] to get to the Door menu

Then type the letter combo between the [ ]'s for the door you want to play.

Type: main [enter] to return to the main menu and then G [enter] to quit.

Man that post brought back some memories! I played a ton of Legend of the Red Dragon back in the day. Of course that was back when a "big" game was 6 megs, and it took right at an hour a meg to download.

I'll admit though that even in the modern hi-res super 3D graphics, and 800mb+ games. I still find myself playing more MUD's, and Mushes than anything else. Especially Shadowrun: Seattle Mush, and Shadowrun: Detroit Mush.

Shadowrun is really cool stuff, I'd love to see a good 3D RPG made out of it. A MUD Shadowrun is still appealing. I'm really tempted to check it out, but I know how much time those things can eat. I played the heck out of a MUD based on Shadowrun way back in college.
