Winning the game with a tie

by Keith Frampton · in General Game Discussion · 01/08/2004 (6:15 pm) · 10 replies

When two (or more) players tie in a game, how is it decided who is the winner? Many players are curious as to what the deciding factors are. Any chance you could enlighten us all Justin?

Thanks in advance,

Keith

If i had to take a guess, i'd think it was a persons rank (or alphabatised)

*bump*

Can't be rank or alphabetized. I've won & lost games to players with a lower rank. The names of both players have been higher than mine alphabetically as well. Would love to hear from you Justin. In most games with a tie, players are always speculating as to how it happens.

Thanks,

Keith

I think the last one to hit gets the win.

Sorry for the delay, I had to dig up an answer with the server developer. The answer is that ties are resolved with a coin toss.

We are talking about ways to improve tie-breakers for the next version of Orbz - like continuing to spawn bonus (purple) stars at the end of match until a tie is broken.

Thanks for the info Justin... certainly explains why we couldn't figure it out. :-) As for the new way to break a tie... that method would shake things up a bit! Imagine being tied with another player & a purple star spawns... a player in 3rd or 4th could come along a take the game with a shot at the purple. It would certainly keep the players on their toes!

Heh, I seem to lose the coin toss a lot. :)

Also, it seems like if the host is tied for 1st with another player, the host automatically wins the toss I think.

The ranking server is breaking the tie and has no idea who hosted the game. I assure you the coin toss is random to break a tie and no preference is given to the host.

It does seem like it though whenever im tied with the host i always lose the toss

But what you need to remember (or should I say do :) is probability...

The chance of me throwing a head is 50/50. The chance of me throwing 100 consecutive heads, while highly improbable, is still possibile.

Anyway, Heads I win, Tails you lose!!!!!!!!!!
