3DS to MAP Converter (or is it possible?)

by Scott Johnson · in Torque Game Engine · 08/27/2001 (10:54 am) · 8 replies

Greetings,

I've been doing some modelling in Worldcraft and was wondering if there is a way to convert the .3ds files into .map files for use in WC?

I've searched many 3d Sites and was able to find converters to almost every other file type imaginable.

The reason that I ask is that I've got a number of .3ds files that I would really like to get into world craft and then import into Tribes2/V12... (and I don't have 3DS Max, studio, etc...)

Another Question,

In Worldcraft, when I create an "Interior" I get these warnings about Orphaned Poly's?? anyone know what these mean?

Thanks, and Any suggestions would be appreciated

I usually got orphaned poly errors when a brush wasn't textured or if I had more than one wad file in the preferences. I also got some orphaned poly errors when I had more than 4 LOD's for the buildings. Generally though, you can just ignore these warnings and go about your business =)

There's a max2mapexporter included with the tools. What does that do? Sounds like a 3DS to Map converter?

Yeah, I was looking for an .exe to go with those files... When I built the V12, it didn't seem to create that application, It could just be part of the 3DS Plugin... anyone?

Hi,

Has anyone actually brought a 3dsmax model into V12? I couldn't manage it in Tribes 2 despite reading and following all sorts of tutes- also got help from a mod. Maybe I lack the patience and precision but I dont think so I will solve it.

Has anybody got a box shape or pyramid or whatever and been able to add it to the list of static objects and then actually been able to import it to a mission in T2 or V12? Could you please tell me how to do it.

Does the V12 thingy allow you to import greyscale maps as in T2 which I thought was the best feature of T2 being a terrain nut. I love flying around my local hills. T2 is the best flight sim ever.

Brian,

Yes, you can bring in greyscale heightmaps with V12. You can also bring in Max files. The exporter is a plugin not an executable. There is currently an exporter for Max 3 and for Max 4 for max to Map files (which are for Worldcraft import) and for Max to dts which is an internal format used by v12. Max to dts is used for models capable of animation. Max to Map is for use in prefabs and other objects to go into Worldcraft. Worldcraft Map files are converted to Dif files which are used in conjunction with the terrain editors to create interior and exterior areas.

I will make you models of buildings if you explain to me how to bring 3dsmax models into T2 and V12.

I will make terrain from your topographic maps if you can explain to me how to use a satellite photo as an overlay on terrain without the textures- lush etc in T2 or V12

I am not up to making Notre Dame as in Unreality.com but thats is the kind of thing I want to do.

Anyone want to cooperate using groove?

Are you wanting to bring in a structure (building, platform, or whatever) or are you just wanting to pull in a model?
