GL_EXT_paletted_texture dropped from Nvidia G-FX Go5600

Hi,
I'm trying to get Torque running on a laptop using an Nvidia Geforce FX Go5600 mobility chip and discovered that it has no support for this legacy OpenGL extension (thereby causing Torque to crash on certain textures). Further searching through various newsgroups seem to suggest that Nvidia believes DXTC is a viable replacement, and may proceed with dropping other opengl extensions in the future. Is this a concern? Any workarounds? I just encountered this problem, so I can't suggest anything yet (other than some brute force code hashing). Will post an update later...

Well, I have a GF4 440 Go, and I don't recall running into any problems along this line. Then again, it's kinda outdated. :)

The only time so far that I've seen it disappear is when doing a driver update on the 40.xx series but in the next driver release it came back. The only reasons I could attribute this to was either it was a bug or that nVidia where 'testing the water' by removing it.
How official this is, I do not know.

I've seen lots of posts on forums regarding this issue, some 'apparently' from nVidia. I use this extension frequently and so I notice when it goes away. My experience so far is that it is still there on the latest Quadro-FX 1000,2000 and 3000 and so far the 5200, 5600, 5800 and 5900 Ultras have it too.The only time so far that I've seen it disappear is when doing a driver update on the 40.xx series but in the next driver release it came back.
