SpeedTree

Has anyone looked at implementing SpeedTreeRT for Torque? It looks good, but BIG price tag. It would really take the torque world to a new level if possible.

Do they interact, too? Can the trees be destroyed? :-)
What about performance? I saw your specs listed, above. Pretty well may leave my 700mhz/Radeon 9500 out. =/

The Trees arent breakable, or destroyable, but you can to
switch on or off the leaves or the fronds :) A collosion box per tree is presented.
Runs well at the 34-35 fps with highest detail settings, with some hundreds of Speedtrees.
They have an easy LOD method, its working nice...
In the game there will be some detail switcher to make it playable on slower machines, like as the wind on off, and similars,
but the low-end specifications will be aroun 1.0 Ghz and Gef3, Playeble with some visual stunts around 1.5-1.6 and Gef4, and optimal
over 2.0Ghz (or 2000+) with an uptodate videocard.
In the game the fog will be bigger, and the camera not an FPS-one, dont forget this screenshots demonstarting the Speedtrees :)

edit: hmmmm... some of us ought to take to making some enhancements to Adam Strzelecki's L-system tree resource, which could really become pretty decent with some good LOD and such.

Wow, looks great. A shame that speedtree costs so much (I'd rather not have to pay them royalties either), looks like I'll be sticking to my own work.edit: hmmmm... some of us ought to take to making some enhancements to Adam Strzelecki's L-system tree resource, which could really become pretty decent with some good LOD and such.

Royalty is very low rated on Speedtree. About 0.5% only !
More than acceptable, dont forget this is a very high value addon !

Thats looks great! but I have to agree they need some type of Speedtree Lite or something. Maybe 100,000 trees or less for indie type licenses.

Ahhh that's not bad at all. I still prefer the DIY approach tho.

There is an aditor as i wrote above, called SpeedtreeCad Lite. This is an editor
where the user can to design the trees. IDV, the company behind Speedtree have a plan about to
release a Pro version in the next quarter of 2004, where you can to design, AND exporting trees usable,
common 3d format . They cant interact, but its will be a tool for easy-to-design trees.
I dont know about the prices, but i think thats will be cheap !

Im a little envious of you.
So hows it look in game? Hows the frame rates.
Can you record a little video for us. :) The screenshots look nice I must say. Is the lighting baked?

I am very interested in speetree. My project is Mars Mod. http://marsmod.com. Gabor Forrai, I guess you guys paid the $600 fee and royaltees deal. That sounds like alot, but then trees are more then "just" background. Tress and foliage and terrain are most of a games backdrop.Im a little envious of you.

Framerates are pretty nice, Speedtree isnt a power hungry LIB :) at my 27th of december's post you can see
the actual framerate datas.
The price is 795usd + royalty, (or 5,995 in one time payment) and i think this is a good offer, Speedtree imho is unbeliavable cool.
The trees are lightable by the sun, and any fxLight source. No casted shadows at the moment, later we are planning to make
an addition about casted shadows on terrain by the speedtree foliages, at the moment all the shadows are tricky ones.
Video coming soon.

I had some problems with my machine right now, i've got instability issues, and my system is totally empty
no video codecs, even fraps, or torque..etc. I promise next week, as i solve i, there will be a movie.

By the way what kind of game are you making Gabor? Its probably a commercial enterprise huh?
01/02/2004 (1:50 pm)
Well I contacted IDV and now I have my own copy of the trial runtime code. I will be diving into the code in great detail tonight. I could be in trouble with the unreal engine Im using as I dont have access to the C++ code. Anyway I dont care becuase there are usually ways around these things, one way or another.By the way what kind of game are you making Gabor? Its probably a commercial enterprise huh?

You probably want to have this discussion somewhere where SpeedTree licensees are allowed, not here...
