SpeedTree

Has anyone looked at implementing SpeedTreeRT for Torque? It looks good, but BIG price tag. It would really take the torque world to a new level if possible.

I wasn't all that impressed with the speedtree demo. =/

Hmmm...were you able to implement it in Torque? The demo exe files on their site I thought was quite impressive, but that definately does not have to equate to the program itself and it's implementation in a gaming environment being impressive.

Can you elaborate?

I wasn't impressed with the trees, themselves.

But, that's just my opinion on it. :-)

Hey its a nice demo.

But the only problem I had was everything was flat and too uniform a well behaved forest. But I guess it has something to do with how they implement those Winnie-the-Pooh forest. :)

@Cameron
On the Speed Tree site they have a link where a game is being develop with Speed tree stuff implemented it looks nice a town surround by a huge (explorable) Forest. Did you Check that out.

For Torque
I am waiting for Melv FXBlitterobject the price is lower heh and I like the L-system that was use to make a tree object. A good combination of resources can produce a decent forest in torque.

Seems a little expensive for what's essentially background fill for most games.

I dont think so Mark. You can to make contract with them about a royalty based payment method, and if you choice like this, you must to pay only a much lower price what is more acceptable. Ofcourse not for a little or for a zero dollar budget game.
Here are more informations about prices on Speedtree
http://www.idvinc.com/html/sales.htm

The RT Speedtree SDK looks like a totally usable realtime powerup for Torque, we are planning to adopt it anyway.

"little"..i mean a very little (maybe better word is for that the "tiny") budget of course.

I'm sorry-- I got SpeedTree and TREEMagik mixed up. TREEMagik wasn't all that impressive, although it does make decent low-poly games.

I checked out the latest demo for SpeedTree, called "The Valley"--and wow! Those are some pretty neat trees!

Yes, I know they have a royalty option. I'm sure the royalty is priced such that they expect to get their 6 grand regardless.

My point is, for the price they're asking, it's probably around a wash to just hire a modeller to put together a couple of tree models. 6 grand is a little over 5 weeks of full time pay for a modeller.

Dark Age of Camelot: Trials of Atlantis will be in stores tomorrow or the day after. They have licensed the SpeedTree technology. So in a couple days I can probaly give a review of how it looks and works in a real game engine.

Mark..
You will got not the trees only, but all the SDK about self casted shadows on trunks, and the leaves moving realtime, included variable wind, realtime foliage, and ofcourse all the needed source code, what is ready to implement into any open gl based engine.
Show me that gfx artist who did it in 5 weeks, and i will to hire him ;)

Good news.
We are implemented the evaluate version of SpeedtreeRT into TGE, and its 90% done.
The trees are visible, they have trunk, and leaves, and its possible to define a wind, and all the
trunk and leaves are moving as in the realtime demomovies. :)
There are a few minor problems yet, but as it is fixed, i will to show you pictures, or maybe a movie ...before xmas.
Just wait and see...

Gabor,

Being trees are "backgrounds" is it going to be possible to make it an option for a game?

My 1.5 year old PC can't run the demos so my guess is many a "normal" PC out there wont run with it either. (it could just be me)

Still it a very nice thing. Sometimes I sit back and dream what the PC game will look like in 5 years.

(for movies of what they are talking about see

Dan
Are you think as the trees are only 2d images in the game, as a background ? Its possible with Speedtree ? This is your question ?

Yes, its possible, there are an editor program included with the evaluate bundle, called SpeedTreeCAD Lite, and this program
is the tool to design the trees. Are there a possibility to export textures only from the CAD Lite, and use it freely as
an option on static , simple planes. Of course, with this method you must to applicate them -for example- with the existing
fxFoliage replicator, or a cross-plan like simple object(s).
The SpeedTreeRT in our game will be a visual option, and its will be switchable to static (no wind, no moving) from the options menu.
The testconfiguration is a developer server, based on a Dual AMD Athlon MP 2000+ and a Ti4200 Gef4 videocard, included 1 gigs of RAM.
The game's minimum specification will be around 1.5 Ghz CPU + Gef3 64Mb.

Hello to all.

As i said, here is a few example images, with Speedtree RT in action, inside of
TGE. The pictures are taken from an not-presented-yet upcoming game, its will be
unhide at the end of january.
Movies are coming soon, too.

I wish you all a happy and successfull-in-the-industry year in 2K4 :)
