I think that Jeff Tunnel should conscript John Carmack to write an indie engine, that would be AWSOMee.

@Pat: Now that TGE 2.0 screenshot rocks! Is that fur made with nVidia Cg or HLSL? Hehehe...

"While the engine itself is a technical marvel, unfortunately GarageGame's promotion of the 'Kill A Kitten' level was considered to be distasteful to many. I interviewed Jeff Tunnell, CEO of GarageGames, about the public's reaction to the controversial level included with the Torque 2 SDK. 'I believe the "Kill A Kitten" demo is a supreme example of the technological feats accomplished in the new Torque engine. It has new pixel shaders and graftal edging. Plus, you get to kill a kitten with a .357 Magnum. I mean, heh, even Carmack didn't think to include that with Doom III.'"

With Torque 2, you can see the fear in the kittens eyes before it eats lead.

Is the weapon moddable? I'm more preferential to a Smith & Wesson .500 Magnum. Some people say it's overkill, but, hey - why take chances when killing kittens.

im only 14 but have huge ambistion to learn c++ and be a game programer. i know you might think im a joke but i am really considering going to Full Sail for college or something. do any of u know any thing about Full Sail or a good college u recomend that i could go look at in a few years? also... lets say i was to become a game designer what do u think i sould know at what age. like a huge knowledge of c++ at age ?? and good modleing skills at age ?? and stuff like that..
~Thanks, im all ears.

The cool thing about Torque is that you really don't need to start with source code. I mean, sure, it'd be really neat if you could mod the engine, but most games don't mod the VC++ code(...at least, I don't think...). Personally, I know very little C++ (started with really high level languages, so I'm really deficient with low level), so the source won't concern me till later on.
As for colleges, I'm looking in MIT right now, although it doesn't seem like I'll make it...if not, I plan to attend Digipen in California (that is a college, right?), and if that fails, I'll still have other colleges. My friend (he's a senior in high school) is interested in studying abroad (sp?), and he plans to go to Japan. He also plans to study software engineering.
My dad majored in software engineering in Boston University, but I heard you need a pretty good math SAT score.
A lot of people I know are already learning C++ (most of them around the ages of 12 - 16). My dad also recommends learning C++ first, since "All languages have the same idea" (quoth my dad)
Hope this helps!
(PS this whole thing about Torque 2 is just a joke (...right?)...it's still version 1.2 right now =D )

Wassup! I'm 14, but I started game development like 2 years ago...it wasn't really because I wanted to make games, but I was really lonely after I moved...thus, my obsession with games =DThe cool thing about Torque is that you really don't need to start with source code. There is currently no official planned release of Torque 2 (or any other engine at GG)
I am not an employee. I don't speak even for them. Thats just what I know. :-)
If you take a look at the "products" that they are releaseing you will see some which are "comming soon" There isn't a Torque 2 in that list.

Without the source, it's pretty limiting - sure, you can mod with what's there, but, there's always that "Oh cool - I wish I could add that resource in here!" or "If I could just change the..." stuff that comes up.
12/21/2003 (7:24 pm)
Josiah: While it's possible to build a Torque based game without the source code, you loose a lot by not having it. For instance - there are always little fixes going into the HEAD version. These aren't rolled into the demo (until they release an entirely new demo) for the most part. You also can't make use of the various code snippets and resources that are available - sometimes it's just little stuff, but there's a lot of really kick butt stuff that require changes to the C++ side.Without the source, it's pretty limiting - sure, you can mod with what's there, but, there's always that "Oh cool - I wish I could add that resource in here!" or "If I could just change the..." stuff that comes up.

if there is any one out there around age 14 and would like i would be happy to talk to them about stuff and get to know them. or work on some game, or share ideas.

OH yea i also want to try to go to MIT. if i dont make it into game disigning ill probably be a mechanical engineer (like my dad who went to yale). but i still have 4 years to figure it all out. i am on the computer a lot because i dont get out much and hang out with friends every day. one thing is because we live in vermont and u cant walk to ur friends house. second is my dad works with computers every day. my mom doesnt like me being on the computer a lot (she hates it) and my dad doesnt either because i play a lot of games. but one good thing is that being a nerd keeps me off drugs. about 70% of the people in our school do them. im not sure of the 70% it may be higher or lower but it is a lot of people. i dont think im a nerd but i bet a lot of people that know me think i am. i know a lot about computers for my age (around here). i play soccer and snowblade (like skiing but w/ smaller skies).if there is any one out there around age 14 and would like i would be happy to talk to them about stuff and get to know them. or work on some game, or share ideas.

For the 14 year olds: Start practicing now. Don't wait until you get college, or high school, or whatever. The older you get, the less free time you'll get to do things you think are fun, in my experience.

So what should i start learning now?

@Nick: well, download Realm Wars, and play around with it (both from the development aspect and from the game aspect, as it is pretty addictive =D). That's what I did, and in a two weeks, I made up my mind to buy Torque. Of course, you may feel otherwise.
One of the engines I started with was the RPGToolkit (www.rpgtoolkit.com), a neat 2d RPG engine. Before, you had to pay 20$ for it, but I think it's all open-source now.
Another engine I used before Torque was the GameMaker (www.gamemaker.nl). It was pretty neat and easy to use, and REALLY user-friendly. It costs 15 bucks, but before it used to be free >.< The license should let you sell your games without royalty...
Hope this helps!

@Davis: yeah, i'm feeling the loss already =\ I see a LOT of cool code resources out there that I really want to use, like the laser beam implementation - however, I'm too lazy to recompile the source over again (my comp isn't that fast so it takes 20 minutes, and I don't even have VC++). Besides, I'm not very good with C++ code...so I plan to work my way down, as I always have. Thanks for the heads-up though =D@Nick: well, download Realm Wars, and play around with it (both from the development aspect and from the game aspect, as it is pretty addictive =D). Oops i didnt mean to post that same question twice, my computer is really messed up.
Torque Owner Dan -
Although it would make visits to the Doctor a little bit harder...
Doctor - You have come down with a virus.
Me - Computer or Biological?
Doctor - Computer.
Me - Oh :( That can't be. I have never been to one of "those" brain sites.
Doctor - Sure I hear that all the time. Brain write two Norton scans and e-mail me in the morning.
