Cheap method to scan clay figures into beginning mesh?

I was doing a little research and it appears that any 3D scanner is within the 3 to $6000 range which is way out of my financial ability. I enjoy working with clay and have recently found out that I can take Georgia clay and make it into potter's clay with a white vinegar treatment. I am also making a cheap kiln as well which is easy to do.
I would love to use this as a means to make the the objects in my game. Obviously I need a way to scan them as a 3D mesh and go from there to make them presentable for an object in Torque. Is there any methods that can be utilized to cheaply scan objects? I know the answer is most likely no, but maybe someone has had little experience with 3D scanners.

It creates a very high detail mesh, but with some tweeking and a bit of creative use of normal maps you can actually come up with some interesting stuff. I highly recommend if you decide to try this, spend a little bit of extra money and purchase a bright green laser. The quality of the scan turns out much better.
