I'm new and have a few questions

Here shortly I'm going to be attending programming classes. I have a basic knowledge but not really enough.

What exactly will I need to know to make a decent game? If I attend programming classes and learn some modeling, would that be enough? If I want to make a First Person Shooter, will I need to know anything special about connecting to servers or similar tasks?

Thanks for any replies, I'm just trying to figure out what I need to know to start out.
