UDK to Torque3D Transition - Looking for Help

by Drastik Games · in General Discussion · 09/27/2011 (12:09 pm) · 5 replies

I have been working with UDK (Unreal Development Kit) for years, but I decided to give Torque 3D a spin since my project is hitting some major bumps with Unreal. UDK just doesn't seem stable, the monthly updates of the kit are rendering my previous work useless. My project is a FPS/RPG hybrid, which of course isn't one of Unreal's strongsuits. I had developed an RPG Framework, though due to the pace of Epic's updates on the kit, my framework is again, useless. I am so frustrated with Unreal, and it seems that Torque 3D would be a suitable alternative. I did my research and was impressed with Torque, I've had my eye on it for years. A little after I started working with UDK I found out about it, but never really got on the boat. I regret that now of course. I bought Torque 3D, but a few things still cross my mind. Below I have tried my best to portray what I'm still feeling about the UDK to Torque transition.

1. Is Torque suitable for online content? How many players can one support on one title, what are the engine's network limitations? (UDK could only support 64 players all in all)

2. Are there more advanced "render add-ons" for Torque? Ones that could increase graphics quality and lighting? Just looking for a little something to take advantage of the 3d assets I have created - the ones from my UDK days.

3. Where can I download the Torque 3D MMO Kit? This particular free kit would serve as a good base for my project transition. If anyone has downloaded it, can they upload it for me? Much appreciated.

I look forward to hearing what this great online community has to tell me. For good or bad. Hopefully one of you also has obtained the MMO Kit as well. Can't wait for your help, I appreciate it. Thanks again!

AFAIK

1: yes, depends on your levels and the player objects polycount, same as UDK out of the box.

2: yes.

3: Which of the mmo kits. The dreamgame one, or the one based on MoM?
The mmo-kits both are sort of far away from FPS/RPG and more leans towards larger persistent world wannabees.

The mmokit from dreamgame is history, the one based on MoM can be found using search and browsing a couple of links. Will force you to deviate slightly from pure GG engine tampering though.

PS: If your tired of the update pace of UDK -you came to the right place ;)

Thanks for your quick reply Christian, I appreciate it. To expand on the render add-ons question, where can I find some of these, such as their names or websites. Could you give me an example of one? Also, I was talking about the MMO Kit based on MoM. I have tried several different websites and links for the kit, but all of them seem to be broken or dead. I am aiming to use it as a basis for my new RPG Framework. Could you direct me to the link for the kit? Most of the ones I find are dead. Thanks again!

I believe both of those are history now. WinterLeaf Entertainment is working on a MMO Kit for T3D but it is still in development.

Thanks for the info, Paul! I am looking forward to the release of the kit. Can't wait. I forgot to mention my FPS/RPG game is aimed for an online audience, not exactly massively multiplayer but close. Thanks.

I assume you mean something like Purelight, else see the Shader Thread

The MMOKIT seems to have been shut down, find info about it here
