I am abandoning Blender...

by Greg Albright · in Artist Corner · 09/27/2011 (6:38 am) · 7 replies

The collada exporter for blender is broken. I have looked over the dev logs at blender and it doesn't look like it will be repaired any time soon.

Also I qualify for free software from Autodesk. What should I use? I am inclined to use XSI.

I feel I have to explain my avatar. That was the first thing I did in Sculptris that didn't explode all over the place. Version 2. ZOMG when you guys where helping me switch to max why didn't you say Mudbox? Oh wait you did and I ignored you.

Max or Maya are the most popular software applications on the market (Max more than Maya) so you cannot go wrong with either if you actually want to pursue this as a career. XSI unfortunately while very nice seems to be becoming a niche product for particle effects.

OMG, at about two hours in with Max, Blender is an impossibly crude tool...

Edit1: Ahhhh thats why I couldn't get any interest in my premade window objects

Max vs. Maya:

It really depends on what you want to do with the software. If modeling is your thing then Max may be the better way to go since it has a nice workflow for poly modeling. Maya's poly modeling is equally nice ( and in some cases even better ) but it is an intensive tool to learn since it can do so much.

For animation Maya is definitely superior ( especially in terms of rigging ) Max scripting can be awkward and a bit of a pain to learn where as Mel script ( Maya ) is much easier to work with. Maya also understands true local space which is invaluable when working with animation curves.

I believe Maya's rendering algorithms are much more refined as well but it really depends on how you utilize them.

Overall Maya is a much stronger tool but Max is slightly less intimidating to learn. If you're getting free autodesk software, they do sell a creation suite that comes with both software packages as well as mudbox and a few others.

Well, Max feel like an Oddyssey at the moment. A whole new vista of tools. Ive worked through a rigging tutorial in Max, and coming from Blender, Rigging is a snap in Max. Pure Joy.

The biggest issue right now is muscle memory and "where is" but im getting it.

I was probably too harsh on Blender... Blender does have really nice sculpt and texutre painting tools, (does Max offer ~any~ texture painting facility or am I missing something?)

Mudbox is my next stop, but at the moment, that will confound my muscle memory issues and "where is" reflexes even more.

The effect is a bit like picking up a musical instrument that you technically know how to play but have no mastry. Ive been playing the saxophone, and I just picked up the clarinet, and all the keys are in the same basic place, but they play different notes!

I think I have about a month of a tough uphill curve in Max to get up to speed for the types of things I want to do.

Now if I could just remember where that loop cut tool was...

Edit: and too look like a total noob I just found the easy loop tool and freeform edit tools.

Please ignore everything I say. Things in bold italic were posted out of noob ignorance, sorry to inflict my ignorance on you:P

I just saw that Blender 2.60RC1 just was released and is supposed to have updates for the Collada Exporter and thought of this thread. If Max is working out for you then definitely stick to it.. but just thought I'd give an update for anyone browsing by.

Max has overwhelmed me. So much new stuff to learn. On the other hand it is kinda sort missing features. So I needed to get mudbox as well... And Sketchpad as well...

And now when I was quite comfortable with 4 gig before, I find myself wanting 8 gig.

And all that, and I still fire up Blender to do stuff real fast if im not wanting to fight the curve.

At the same time, I havent accidently clicked x and lost all my work.

And... where did my texture go? That feeling is gone.

And uv unwrapping... wow I was a pro at Blender uv unwrapping.

So Blender is still there, but it is fading.

But I have this texture to bake, and I don't even know where to start in Max...

/stream of thought not wanting to take time to respond properly...

Yeah, I've found no matter what 3d creation suite you use, it's always going to feel like an overwhelming amount of information to absorb or software issues to overcome.. all the way up until you master it. Then all of a sudden you'll realize you're breezing right through everything.

It's not as important which 3d app you choose but more how you exploit it to do truly unique and creative work.
