GarageGames Forum Left Much Unsolved Threads, lack of info for beginner...

by andrisalim · in General Discussion · 06/23/2011 (6:48 pm) · 10 replies

It's kinda disappointed when it comes to forum when beginner like me is seeking for some useful information or help.

Most of my threads are left without any reply or response while I see others which are posted on the same day get some replies.

No solution or suggestion to the question asked in threads? Is GarageGames forum being racist in terms of name that people use in the forum or something else? Or people / VETERAN in forum are too busy to help? Or so they are just too lazy these days? Or my threads are invisible? I don't know...

I mean I tried to search some external and internal resources... When I'm searching in this forum I saw lots of threads are way behind 2009. They might be useful but they might not either. I post the threads when I hit the walls and find lack of clues so I look for help or some useful suggestion or information, but nothing comes to my eyes. That's the fact.

It's sad that I rarely can get help (maybe not even one) from the GREAT community of GarageGames. Probably not only me and I'm sure about it.

Honestly, I'm pissed off for a moment... If there is anything that I'm writting here in this threads offences anyone who read this, please correct me and I need clarification about this issue.

Admins or any other veterans please respond, if there is no response even on this kind of topic, that's really pathetic.

I come in peace, thanks in advance.

I don't think there's a reason to be angry. No, you're not the only one who doesn't get an answer to their question. Frankly, I don't even notice the name until I need to for the sake of keeping track of who's saying what in the following thread.

I'm kinda venting my thoughts over why my recent post hasn't been answered.

When people give their time to help, we should be grateful, most of the people who do help, aren't paid to do so. Because they're not paid, it's our responsibility to make sure that there's no reason why they wouldn't post.

Maybe it's not that I'm asking the question badly, maybe I'm asking the wrong question. Maybe I need to be asking what, rather than how, or something of the like.

I'm going over your threads. One thing I've noticed is you're posting a lot in the "General Discussion" forum. This isn't the proper section for your questions. Because Torque technology varies from engine to engine you need to make sure you're posting in the right forum so that the right experts see it.

well I can say they are not racists. My name is Voorhees, which was originally Von Voorhees. Which means I am a Baron, or otherwise a person of nobility in the land my ancestors come from. I and my brothers have had people come up to us and pay us respect based on our last name.

That really means nothing to me as I am an American and I love living here in America. I have been posting here for a few weeks now and no one person has asked me about my name. Also I have had posts ignored or hardly responded to. I go in and reword my post and they get some good amount of responses.

I have also removed posts and put them in another thread and they get responses. When they got no responses before in the other thread. Also as I am somewhat new here, I am not new to game development.

We developed with a different engine last year and this forum seams to me to be like the other one with the other engine. I will ignore any questions that I feel the person did not study the online documentation provided as I did when I came here. Many people have a habit of sort of looking around and then coming to the forum to get people to hold their hand and do a lot of stuff for them.

Before I come ask something on the forums, I will have my two sons spend days researching and going over documentation before coming to the forums for help. If it is code or script related, we would post a couple versions of our script, what its doing or not doing and where we think the problem is. This usually excites the people on the forums and they are happy to help out because they see that we have really worked hard to get to where we are and sort of earned their input.

Sort of like someone coming and asking: "how do I do Glass" or "How do I do glass in T3D?" They might get ignored because they all know there are tutorials on that and if they are asking here, they are not even trying to study the documentation and do the tutorials. That type of person is bettered ignored or the forum people end up building their game for them.

Now if a person comes on and asks: "Can someone take a look at this and give me some input?"

I am trying to do glass in T3D and I have done two tutorials but it is still not working. One is on YouTube and here is the link (Link would go here). The other tutorial is done showing images but it does not show everything . The YouTube video is shaky and blurry because they filmed it with a handy cam instead of screen capture.

I am using Gimp and I understand I need to render out my texture with an Alpha Layer and then adjust the settings in T3D but when I click on the thing to adjust the settings, it is grayed out and will not let me adjust it.

Now you see we can tell that person is trying, trying really hard. So we know they have either not saved the texture .png or forgot to activate "save with alpha" when exporting. So I do not know what you posts or where in the past but I know I do not get special treatment here based on my race or family line.

It does not matter to me what name is posting. I completely go by a standard of this; Does it appear to me that the person posting has spent days researching the topic they are asking about. Have they really searched the internet to see if someone else has solved the problem they are having. Last, before I respond to their post, I will search their subject, problem or topic and if I come up with the answer within 2 to 3 page results of the search, I will not respond to their post because I know they have not really tried to resolve it.

Also if they are working on a project I would not personally work on or support, I will also not help them. It sounds mean but I live by my conscience and what my heart says is right. So, a persons name has nothing to do with it and I have not had anyone here treat me special, even though I am a Prince (Baron) where my ancestors come from.

I am sorry if this post was long winded but I just wanted to make it clear that if anyone here is racists, I have not seen anything of it myself. Not at this forum or at the other companies forums I was at before coming here. It is usually all about the posters impressions on the readers. Have they really tried to resolve it before getting an easy way out? The person posting might think they have but it is the reader who decides that based on what they posted and the thread they post it in.

Peter, I really appreciate your response here and in my other threads for the suggestions, thank you very much.

Okay, what makes me feel unhappy is that only 1 reply out of 4 threads (Thanks to David Jauregui) that I have posted up and maybe because like what you have said I am asking wrong question or also posting in improper section about my questions.

I agree that people don't get paid to post suggestions to any other threads. But we as a user of Torque products did pay (esp. for pro edition users) for the usage of Torque products so I think we still deserve at least some responses about our questions from GarageGames official members.

I'm not sure how experts go through the forum threads. Maybe it's my problem about posting in the improper section that makes it hard to my threads to be seen. Let's see below threads if the are in the proper section.

Are they in the right section?

It really has nothing to do with race, as Daniel pointed out. I've been a member here for a long time (half a decade come this Saturday), and a good number of both my forum+IRC questions have gone unanswered (or the problems unresolved). It is a matter of what questions catch someone's attention, and if the people whose attention they catch feel like they can provide a good answer. You will probably have better luck on IRC where people sit around killing time (more so than on the forums), but it still isn't perfect.

@Daniel, thanks for the response and your opinions.
I get your points and my impressions on the readers may not seems good when I'm posting.

Frankly speaking, I did put on efforts on the project that I am working on and that might not seems enough to the readers when I'm posting and or maybe my style of posting.

By this time, I think it's great that I get some input about what's happening and what people thinks here. Because before I started this threads, there are lots of wonders in my mind because I think what I have been posting were right and should received at least some helps because I DO put efforts in it but might not deep enough like what you have mentioned.

About racism, it's just my wonder so I put it into this threads and probably I am over-sensitive about that issue. Thanks for ensure me about that.

@Thomas, thanks for the advice. I haven't tried IRC, maybe I should. You're right, impressions from posters on the readers is important from the posters.

A poster may write what he/she encounters in their project in a long post and got ignored because people think this guy is not working hard enough by judging from what the readers have read in the threads about this guys' question (wrong style of posting). Like what @Daniel said. But maybe this guys actually has been working 2-3 days and couldn't find the clue, maybe this guys searching style and understanding about some issue may not be stronger than any others, that is just not fair.

Of course providing suggestion is still up to the readers whether to help or not to. However, before making a judgement about the poster through the impression that the reader got when reading the post, I think the reader should ask some related questions to dig up and know how the poster is working on his/her project.

Part of the issue is visibility. T3D owners get a nice private section on the forums where all the really good help is found. The public forums are then tucked away; out of site, out of mind, as they say. This might be a good topic for the site-feedback section.

This is definitely not the kind of thread I like to come across when browsing outside of the iT2D forums.

@Andri - I'm sorry you are feeling frustrated by the lack of attention. When I look at your most recent three or four threads, each one has gotten a response from some of our other Torque users. Official responses from employees are sporadic, so I can understand some of your concern. The straight forward answer, without making an excuse, is that we have been stretched thin for quite a while.

When we rebooted the company in January, we had maybe five or six in house employees. Out of contractors and employees, we only had one or two who worked with all of the engines. Thankfully, we are growing again.

Some of you might notice Chris T. posting a lot, mostly in the T3D sections where we really need more support. I have dedicated 90% of my focus on iTorque 2D engine, which is why you do not see me in the rest of the forums anymore.

The support role is hard, that's for sure. We've had to shuffle people in and out of support roles to work on the actual engines so we can deliver more quality products. From January until now, we only had one option: buckle down and focus on the engines first. We just came up for air after releasing T3D 1.1, which is

To stomp any speculation or concern, race means absolutely nothing to any of us at GG. We sell our engine to all parts of the globe, deal with people from ages 15 - 60, e-mail professionals and students and so on. Names and pictures count for nothing, because we are just trying to hear your voice via forum posts.

If you are having real blocker issues, hop into IRC and point someone with a [GG] tag to your forum post. We will come up for air and try to help.

@Michael - It's great to hear from you Michael. Yes, they are there after this post of threads, but I appreciated.

Somehow your explanation is solid to me and I understand what's going on within it. I just need to clear up my wonders and need some clarifications and all responses here gave me that.

I'm sorry if I bring any negative feedbacks that might offence / against some of T3D users.

Yes, I will try to hop into IRC next time when I encounter with some other issues and of course after I have done my research and still hit the wall.

I appreciate all of the responses here. Thank you very much.

http://www.garagegames.com/community/forums/viewthread/126599 should be in "artist corner". You may have to wait a while to get an answer to your question becouse most of us don't use 3dsmax. You might check the version of 3dsmax that the exporter was written for. (I have no clue how to do that).
