For Software Development/Engineering Career - focus on games or other tools....

Need advice...
I understand how to implement and construct games up to working level. For a mainstream software development/engineering career, would developing games be better than switching to business and communications applications in terms of getting attention and the foot in the industry? I have heard once you can program games, you would have no problem creating general applications..... I am starting to doubt this though.
