V 2.1 Problems?
by Steve Krile · in General Game Discussion · 08/17/2003 (6:31 pm) · 9 replies
I downed 2.1 and it fired up great. Runs fine. Not problems...except.
When I went on line I can't chat, see other people chatting or see other's names. Is this a temporary problem? A new feature? A Mac issue?
Please let me know.

So, I re-installed 2.1 and did not id my old version. Now everything works as it should...but...my orbz are gone. I can go through and re-win them, especially since you lowered the bar on 32 and 33 (thanks btw), but I'd like not to have to.
Any way i can get my orbz and scores back without losing chat functionality? Let me know.

Well...here's the story. I was running v2.0 just fine and dandy. Then I updated to v2.1 and the above problems occurred (on my iMac G4 17"). When installing the new version I followed the dialog that asked if I had a previous version and would I like to save my high scores. I answered yes, id'd my old version and was off and running. The up side - I got to keep all my earned orbz. The down - well the whole chat thing fell apart. So, I re-installed 2.1 and did not id my old version. Now everything works as it should...but...my orbz are gone. I can go through and re-win them, especially since you lowered the bar on 32 and 33 (thanks btw), but I'd like not to have to.

- ignition file
- fps/client/highscores.cs
- fps/client/prefs.cs
- fps/server/prefs.cs
- common/server/serverprefs.cs
So, the only possibility would be that something in your 2.0 preferences is somehow screwing up the chat stuff.
Maybe Justin might have an idea of what could possibly cause that -- I don't have any clues. You might need to send him your prefs files, but I'll let him chime in.

The only difference between upgrading and not is that upgrading copies over:- ignition file
- fps/client/highscores.cs
- fps/client/prefs.cs
- fps/server/prefs.cs
- common/server/serverprefs.cs

Anyways, when you're down on ground-level and going for that orange star or trying to shoot up onto the platform, it says that you are out of boundary, when, as a matter of fact, you're NOT ! I think that the border has been set a little too tight out on that cape. (Hope you know what I'm talking about.)
Also, isn't there a way to eliminate those very inconvenient, sometimes occurring, lags just when you're about to shoot ? Has anyone else experienced those minor, one second, lags ? You're quick, you aim fast, you fire and *schlunck* - it lags, for no apparent reason, and you miss your target by an inch !! The game flows perfectly, but yet, it lags during approx. 1/25-35 shots ! It's so annoying when you KNOW that you would have hit the target !

I have encountered a problem with the "Out of boundary"-feature. On the level "Pillar Run", there is a platform with a yellow star above it and an orange one beneath it, located out on a cape. (You can get up there by shooting or letting an "accelerator" shoot you accross half the course.)Anyways, when you're down on ground-level and going for that orange star or trying to shoot up onto the platform, it says that you are out of boundary, when, as a matter of fact, you're NOT ! You should be able to go into the Game Options and turn OFF the parental filter. See if that fixes your chatting issues after an upgrade.
Did you happen to back up your highscores.cs file before re-installing the game fresh? That file contains information about your progress in the single-player mode.

Steve - it sounds like the parental filter is on after upgrading (for some strange reason). When the parental filter is on, all chat is disable and people's names are generic. Something in the upgrading process seems like it has cause that feature to be enabled. You should be able to go into the Game Options and turn OFF the parental filter. See if that fixes your chatting issues after an upgrade.

On the plus side, I hold a few high scores in solo mode now that I've had to go back through and win them again.

Well, it's good to know there is a logical answer...too bad my prefs are gone. Ah well...what are ya gonna do.On the plus side, I hold a few high scores in solo mode now that I've had to go back through and win them again.

If you want to send me your existing fps/client/highscores.cs file and tell me how many gold medals you want, I can send you back a modified file that will at least get you back to where you were.

Steve, sorry to hear that and that we didn't get you a solution quicker. If you want to send me your existing fps/client/highscores.cs file and tell me how many gold medals you want, I can send you back a modified file that will at least get you back to where you were.

Let me know if you need help with this. BTW, you can install 2.1 elsewhere on the disk, and give it your old 2.0 folder, and see if the chat-filter thing Justin mentions fixes your problem.

Steve - your prefs are NOT gone -- as I mentioned, they are still in the Orbz 2.0 folder, so long as you haven't deleted that yet. You should be able to either run the upgrader again, or manually dig into the package file(s) to copy the files I mentioned over to the new 2.1 install.Let me know if you need help with this. So... Since the difference between 2.0 and 2.1 is minimal when it comes to platform-specific code, I don't have any good ideas about changes that might be causing what you are seeing.
Did you have 2.0 before, working fine?
What OS version are you running? Have you upgraded recently? What are your machine specs, incl video?
