2D Art - Poll- Would you buy? How much is it worth for you?

by Ronny Germany · in Torque X 2D · 10/10/2010 (10:03 am) · 19 replies

Before the year ends I will be completing a startup 2D art business with animation quality (in my opinion higher, but lets say the same) as the 2D Fantasy Game Pack or the Isometric Pack's Crossbow Orc character.

I used those as examples for quality (graphics quality and animation) but I will be doing a variety of 2D characters (from humans, knights, and wizards to modern soldiers, tanks, airplanes, as well as monsters such as zombies, skeletons, orcs, even mermaids or deep sea fish)

This will not just be models only, but also environment graphics (buildings, world tiles, objects, etc.)

The view? 2.5D isometric characters, side-scrollers, AND top-down! I don't know if they'll be sold separately or each character "pack" having all 3 views.

Regardless, I am wondering if the community is interested in 2D art that can be used for iPhone games or normal PC games (multiple resolution sprite sheets for every character) and how much each character is "worth"

For example, do you find the 2D fantasy character pack to be too expensive or a great deal? Not enough animation or variety? Too cartoonish?

Also, if you are interested- what theme are you most interested in? (Modern Army Soldiers, Fantasy Knights or Wizards, Fish or Dragons?)

Thank you!

I am totally interested! I think the fantasy pack is a good price, I haven't bought it as I don't have a need for those characters, but would buy if I did.

Mainly I would be interested in environment graphics.

Also interested in non "game type" specific characters.

Extra: I think you could do good offering this, it seems its much harder to get 2D ready content vs 3D ready content. Leaving most of us 2D indie devs having to stick to our own art, pay big $$$ stock image sites, or big $$$ to freelancers.

Oh! VERY INTERESTED!

As Aaron said, there is hardly any quality 2D ready content availible, especially in terms of sprite sheets/characters.

I think the pricing of the 3D Fantasy Character Pack is a good price.

And with the comments about the different view points etc.

I think it would be better to have packs of different characters/art pieces all at the same view-point, because people are un-likely to use top-down, side-scrolling and isometric views all in the same game, and so those extra view-points are of no value to them, justt making the pack more highly-priced.

I personally would like side-scroller 2D art, with cute cartoony characters like in the 2D Platformers Starter Kit, because they suite the art style people like to see in iPhone games, which seem to be selling the best at the moment. :)

I would also highly be interested in 2D props/objects to be used in a side scroll racing game (ramps/pipes/wood planks/signs/cones/etc.. similar to track props/objects found in motorcycle games, "trials HD" for example).

For me Character animation is really difficult. I would pay for a fully integrated animated character to the PSK.

What do you think of characters like this?

Except of course with clothes in addition to a basic model, lol.

Mythical creatures as well.

Or something absurd and whacky like a Dinosaur doing a roundhouse kick?

Anything from animated 2D sprites to single photo shots or character sheet stills.

As well as images for buildings, walls, tilesets, etc.

Love the quality which is amazing! Are you also looking at providing more cartoon 2D characters which look more like a 2d character, rather than just realistic 3d models converted to a 2d sprite sheet :)

Right now I am focusing on realistic 3d models for 2D gaming, but I might check into cute cartoonish models in the near future. I could do Pixar/Disney type humans, or Madagascar type animals.

I am more limited on the cartoonish stuff than the realistic 3d models since I have been building my 3d model library with my own game in mind. Of course, I could still do cartoonish stuff- it just might be a bit more time consuming (thus a higher price) to release in packs.

@Ronny, ok, sounds cool. I would be interested in sic-fi characters, with armor etc, but sort of anime style, with big hair, and quite short...but this is a very specific request :)

@John, I made it myself :)

I can definitely do specific requests.

I really don't know what the average consumer expects to pay for specific request 2D artwork, but I like to be fair (for both me and the consumer, a realistic price for the product) and I find competition to be ridiculously high most of the time, even if I'd pay those same high prices sometimes I don't expect others to or don't consider the price the actual value (I am the same guy who thinks Avocados shouldn't be $1.28 each when they're so tiny. Grr!)

With 3D models rendered in 2D, I can share animations across all of them. Actually this is the only reason I haven't started the business-- im still working on the animations which need to be quality and numerous. So as long as it's humanoid (or humanoid enough) I could do custom characters which all I'd have to do is create or buy the outfits or accessories I might need (which can be pricey sometimes) if I don't already have it in my arsenal, lol.

Anime though? I definitely have that, lol.
I am curious, I'm not asking since I can't create any packages just yet-- but what is a reasonable, fair, or expected price for say... a specific request (hopefully) tailored to a consumer's liking of said anime character package, and what would one expect? I only ask because I am curious about what consumers expect from artists, both in price and quality.

I want to create my business where people can request specific content and I can create it for them without having to add any additional cost outside what it might take for me to grab a few accessories (3d models, textures, or what not).

The reason is that once I make a character, I can sell it from then on out. So if I do custom work or add a few features or upgrades to an existing package, that means I have one more package to sell! And if someone changes their mind, at least my work isn't wasted. Someone will eventually want the same thing (I hope).

I like to be generous, understanding, helpful-- but most of all I love video games and understand myself how difficult it is to find 2D artwork that is at least somewhat quality. Before doing my own art and beginning that road, the 2D Fantasy Game Pack was my only option! LoL.

I want to start with theme sets first though, releasing enough content to supply a good amount of one theme. It would suck for a developer to have only one sci-fi anime character, and for there to be no others to buy (or no sci-fi environment objects or tilesets).

I have mostly Medieval things, but have not neglected my love for sci-fi. I especially have a lot of sci-fi and steampunk outfits for female characters. Afterall, females usually sell better bc of their boobage :P lol

Ok, well generally speaking, specific art for a customer is quite pricy, but also, because for alot of it, the artist makes is exclusivly for that person, so the artist can only make 1 sale from their work.

However, if you plan to make specific stuff, but availible for everyone, i think that is better, because it means its cheaper for indies, and you make more sales :)

So, in terms of pricing, thats up to you, but i'd say that for in-house hobbyists/indies, packaging things up in packs that are less than $50 is better :), because while a more expensive pack might have ALOT, that is alot of money for a hobbyist (well, for some hobbyists)

PS. Do you have an email? Because i'd like to show you some concept art images, to see if you are able to create a 2D pack from it :)

I definitely wasn't going to sell anything more than $50 unless it had several packs together (like a megapack or something, lol)

It sounds like neither I nor the consumer will be disappointed in price. I'm sure each package will be different (I want to have some intro packages that show off the work for $5, or small but worthy upgrades for extremely cheap $1-$10 depending on how much it gives) Now I just have to make sure the animations are quality! :P

I know this ISN'T what you asked (armored, short anime characters) but it inspired me to do a little bit of what I like, lol.

I didn't spend very much time on the final render and posing so it's not perfect, but I thought it was kind of neat.

I love neon green hair, ever since Phantasy Star for Sega, lol.

Yep! It's a mix of DAZ3D and Renderosity models, some other stuff, lots of tweaking, and a rather expensive renderer program and lighting setup.
