Could not find a compatible display device

by Born Interactive · in Hardware Issues · 08/08/2003 (9:46 pm) · 6 replies

I compiled v1.11 with VC6. I didn't make any changes to the source. When I ran "torqueDemo_DEBUG.exe", I got the following
error:

Fatal: (D:\torque\engine\platformWin32\winwindow.cc @ 1038)
Could not find a compatible display device!

I have a MSI GeForce FX 5600 (Driver: v44.03) on Windows XP. It's installed correctly and all other games detect it.

Where does Torgue check for the display device?

I'd be very grateful for any help.

I've seen that error with certain versions of the Detonator drivers (later versions). By going back to an earlier detonator version, the problem went away.

Thanks, Keith. I'll give it a try.

Make sure those are actual nvidia provided drivers and not Microsoft's provided drivers. That's where the big difference is. nVidia's drivers are the real thing while Microsoft's geforce clone drivers are just pathedic and screw up gaming badly. :P

I downloaded them from the nVidia site. I see they haven't been WHQL Certified. Could this be a problem or is it just a Microsoft thing?

Bump. I dl'ed new drivers about six months ago and everythign went fine. now after doing something (I don't know what I installed) it stopped working. as an attempt to fix it I got the newest drivers from nvidia and still nothing.

If it's not the driver, make sure you don't have any remote-desktop software (XP remote admin, Netmeeting, etc.) active.
