IGC - Indie Jam

Hello everyone -

This year at the IndieGamesCon (www.indiegamescon.com) on Friday night, Jay wants to have an "indie jam". There are many musicians in the indie game community surprisingly and the idea is to get up there an have alot of fun.

Jay is trying to find a real indie band that would open up the evening of festivities. Afterwards, the rest of us attendees to the conference can get up and play a few tunes, jam some improv blues, or just make some serious noise.

What we are looking for are volunteers that want to participate in the Indie Jam. What instrument(s) do you play? Can you bring any equipment with you?

Please respond to this forum thread with your interest and if we can get organized, maybe a group of us can pick a few songs to learn before the conference.

Personally, I'll be driving out to Eugene this year and will bring my guitar and amp.

Anyone else?

I'd probably be interested in kickin' back and listenin - live music is my favorite form of music :-) As for gettin' involved - you want people in the crowd, right? ;-)

Sweet!

I'm going this year and I play bass. Unfortunately, my rig won't be able to accompany me from Texas.

Davis - I think last minute additions from the crowd would be great. However, I'm hoping to at least organize enough people to play at least one of the instruments (drums, guitar, bass, keys, vocals). Do you play any instruments?

Kurtis - that's very cool that you play bass. Most people probably won't be able to bring any equipment so I'm hoping we can find enough relatively local people to participate and bring some gear.

This is gonna be fun!

Sounds like a great idea.

I play guitar but probably don't have the guts to get up on a stage and play heh. Most likely won't be able to bring my gear -- I'm flying and don't trust the throwers, excuse me -- "baggage handlers," to not crush my guitar.

Ben - I would never trust airline baggage handlers with by guitar! What kind of music do you like to play? Are you sure you wouldn't just want to jump up for a song or maybe just an easy blues jam? I'm hoping we can get 2 guitar rigs to facilitate more guitar players (most popular) joining in the fun.

Justin: Sorry - I don't play any instruments. Well, I'll take that back - if held at gunpoint, I could probably pick up a 'bone or baratone and play 'em again, but I'd probably still be shot due to lack of talent. It's only been somethin' like a decade and a half since I've played mine (setting at the house, collecting dust.) Best I could do on stage is yell real loud. No, not sing, just yell real loud ;-)

Sounds like one o' the things that will be needed is gonna be loaner instruments - some of that kit is pretty big for cross country trips! (I know - some people won't be confortable without thier own setups, but, WFT - it's all for fun, right? ;-)

Davis - That's cool, we will put you down for "background screamer vocals" :)

It's definately all in fun and will probably sound like total shit. It's just too fun to get up and jam a bit for the heck of it.

If we can get a small group of players identified before hand, we might be able to coordinate everyone learning a couple songs before the conference so its not just noise all night - hehe.

Around here they have places that do instrument rentals. I'm not sure what its like up there.

Also, I might be able to bring my bass and amp, but my cabinet is just too large (and weighs like 80 pounds).

Well you got a drummer right here! It looks like I'll be going. Although, I don't think taking my kit on the plane would work so well, but I'm down for renting one while I'm up there.

@Justin: I play just about anything, prefer kinda bluesy rock stuff. I might be willing to jump up for a song or two... maybe one of those easy classics like House of the Rising Sun or something. I had a sort of 4 year hiatus from playing and just picked it up again like 3 months ago... still feeling a little rusty but with a couple months to get practice in before the IGC I might be able to clean up my playing.

Oh and if you're looking for somehting kind of interesting and a bit odd, I've been working on some acoustic covers of Marilyn Manson songs... they're... well let's just say they're interesting and leave it at that.

Now were cooking with gas! Might as well throw out song ideas while were at it - to help get an idea of what kind of music everyone likes to play.

House of the Rising Sun is a good one. I think those are the quality of tunes were gonna be able to practice remotely.

Our biggest challenge will probably be finding someone brave enough to sing :).

Gots me an idea... could write a song about being an indie developer, something kind of comedic... maybe do it as a parody of another song or something... just a thought...

Well, heck. If there's someone who's a little blues-ish there, if they can play some ZZ-Top rock / blues I might belt out a couple o' notes in front of the mike. La Grange or The Bus/Jesus Left Chicago is obtainable even with my poor vocal talents ;-) Just gotta be somethin' I know most of the words to ;o)

I play Violin, Guitar and could do Vocals. However, I'm very poor at jamming because I could never get the hang of it on violin (I alway sucked at thoese jazz workshops) and I don't know enough chords (I don't think) to do it on the guitar.

Alright, a couple vocal volunteers! Pat, if we identify a couple of songs for everyone to practice, do you think you could learn some guitar or violin parts in time?

Oh, and Justin - there needs to be a 'no recording equiptment' policy at the Jam ;-)

I'm a rock/blues guitarist, if you give me a list of tracks you wanna do I can sit in on em :)

By the way, I did this gig for about 10 years, so I'm happy to stand up and make a fool of myself, if someone can spare a guitar rig to play with. I guess some kinda simple blues/rock stuff will do us fine.

Surely we got a drummer SOMEWHERE out there in torque land? I can sit in on bass for a track or two if we need it.

I also do backing voc's so if you can, get us a spare mic.

Oh, and at our last party, I got up and sang some sinatra tunes (only thing I can sing thats low enough, for some reason while I've got my guitar on I sing castrato, but while I'm singing karaoke style I'm like barry white).

Please no house of the rising sun!!!!

Lets do some Springstien in honour of jeff! get us a simple Brucey track to learn and I'll kazaa it :)

I can do some leadish blues guitar, and raunchy vocals :)
don't have an electric axe anymore, and anyways, as I can't fly direct from Montreal, I would trust even less the "handlers" to get it in less than two pieces, if at all : just carry ons, no
luggage for me, thank you 8p
The lack of powered equipment means I'm rusted, but not beyond "repair", as I've been diddling with a friend's acoustic that's in prolonged storage at my place.
I'll be sure to do some scales, concentrating on pentatonic and myxolydian mode, as there the crux of my style of play :)
Oh, and I'm a jammer by nature, and not a chord player (more like I play sax on a guitar, if that makes any sense to anyone), so I can accompany pretty much anyone, on anything as long as I either know the chords progression in advance, or another guitar player can stand not too far from me so I can look at what he's doing chord wise : too out of practice to recognize them by ear, and I never was real big on solfege anyway.
This is going to be loads of fun !!
Keep on Torq..erh rockin' in a free world !! 8p

Justin: Absolutly, however I will need to make sure that I will be in Eugene in time because I have classes Friday. I will try to find out what the scoop is ASAP on when exactly I'll be there, but that won't happen until September comes around. Hate to fly by the seat of my pants like that. I'll get in touch with you when I can nail down stuff better.
