Site searching headache

by You Meng Tee · in Site Feedback · 07/28/2010 (6:33 am) · 34 replies

Hi guys,

After the site July update, I found that searching for stuff is a big PITA. For example, search for 'lobby' and we have to swim through pages after pages of not really useful results, even after changing keywords such as 'lobby resource', 'lobby example' or 'lobby tutorial'. Kinda reminds me of Altavista in the late 90s.

Perhaps what is needed is to have some sorting options (noticed results is sorted chronologically), such as most popular, or the one with the most search word occurrence, or anything.

Anybody felt the same way?

I noticed this guy shared the same issue (www.torquepowered.com/community/forums/viewthread/118289)

Well, would you feel better if we said it is so we can make fun of none licensee? Something must feed the egos of the legitimate TorquePowered engine owners, other then smug security in a well chosen game engine and the endless fun of website searching for that forum you just read the other day!

This topic comes up every now and then. I am all for free flow of information as an educational light melting away preventable ignorance. And your points of reason are perfectly sound in my view.

Quote:you can always hide everything inside [code] tag from people who have not bought your product, but all other info will be accessible for everyone including search engines.

This sounds like a brilliant solution! I can not think of a single reason it would not work better then what they currently have. Maybe someone else can think of something i am neglecting to consider?

I like the concept of code blocks having restricted veiwing -- that's a great idea... but let 'em fix the search first ;)

I say restrict more and more access ;)

It will not be necessary to fix proprietary search engine because its far more better to add google search to your website which will be much more effective and give better results especially if you put some effort on registering your website on www.google.com/webmasters/ , submit sitemaps and optimize crawling parameters.

I don't like the concept of code blocks having restricted viewing... what about all of the TorqueScript code that also within code tags?

How does code highlight work? I assume it detects language inside [code] tag and then highlights it, if they plug view restriction after language detection step it will work perfectly fine.

Restricting viewing based on code blocks is not an ideal solution. The need for the Private Forum goes beyond having a place to post and view source code. It's also a place to discuss solutions that involved source code and other information that is restricted to licensees.

Plus, the majority of people don't use the code blocks anyway and those that do typically don't set language for the tags.

Patrick - (RollerJesus) cooked up a simple little Google search of TorquePowered site Resource. Doesn't do the private forums of course but I have been able to find many things I knew existed that the TP search has been too blind to find.

Thanks for that resource Michael. Works much better than the current implementation here.

The search is indeed broken.. I typed in quite a few different queries, and it seems like only the most recent entries are showing up - not the relevant ones.

For example, if I type in 'server side melee' in the advanced - search resources section, I get resources about static cameras and weapon sway, both of which don't even contain 'melee' in the post. Quite frustrating.

Well how about the option for those who do make use of the language tag for the code tags? Is there even an option for Torque Script language tag?

From the Markuplite Reference:
Quote:
Syntax highlighting is available for cpp(C++), c#, js (JavaScript), java, php, python, sql, and xml code by specifying the type of code as show below. The default is cpp.
Given that the default is cpp (i.e. source code that is the majority type of code that does get posted in the private forums) doesn't that make the "plus..." part of the above quote beside the point ;)

I'am trying to find info about how to do profiling in Torque. Please tell me what I have to put into search field to find at least something about that? Don't know answer? THAN OPEN ALL YOUR FORUMS FOR GOOGLE INDEXING! It became really annoying

I would think that the profiler info would be in the documentation -- I don't know though cause I don't use/read the documentation.

But a quick search (using Patrick - (RollerJesus)'s Google search of TorquePowered site Resource) did turn this up: Torque Profiler TDN Article

Which proves again that they have to throw away their shitty custom search engine and allow google to do its job.

Who else has noticed that Search seems to be working a helluva lot better lately?

I just did a test, and I agree. The search is working surprisingly well. Coincidence? I think not! :)
