Can I use MilkSHape to render 3D models to 2D images for my 2D game?
If not, what (affordable) 3D modeler out there does such a thing?

This is one reason it may be easier to make a 3D game than a 2D game if you plan on having more than a few objects and characters in the game. It's harder to find cheap/free content for 2D than 3D in my experience, and what you find often won't match visually.

Milkshape does not as yet have a real render feature, though you can take screenshots. You can render to AVI, if you have animations. Note that Milkshape is not the tool of choice for doing this, because you have no control over lighting. If your 3D models are simple (like cube, sphere, torus) then POV-Ray can work really well. I used it for chemistry visualizations. The render quality is great and free, but it's really hard to model in. Blender does in fact render, and will accomplish what you need, but again it's fairly tough to get used to. I have only heard of Wings, so you might check that out too.

Thanks folks, I checked out Blender and it does seem pretty complicated, however free. I'll mess around wiht it a bit I think. They have a book online as well.

You might try using the "print screen" button... or any screen capture utility.
