Web Hosting

I'm trying to figure out what will be the best/cheapest way for us to host a website for a game that we'll be releasing next month. The website will need to be able to support a small mod community.
I've done some research but don't have a way to tell which sites are the best hosts or if I should just set up my own server... Any ideas anyone?

I highly recommend Maxgaming's web hosting =) Great deal and great service!

www.worldwebhosters.com/hosting.html
They're great service and absolutely the best price I've ever seen (yes, they beat out Maxgamings price). I pay $35 / year for 1gb of space with 10gb/mo of bandwidth.
Works great for most game sites. Your mileage may vary.

Timmy, I use ipowerweb, so far its been a great service, 100 bucks a year for a domain, 500mb space and 30gigs per month. Has excelent support, its fast, always works, you can host up to 3 sites per acount, and you get 300 pop3 email acounts. So far I've been pleased with the service, however worldwebhosters looks like a much better deal, I'd go with that if I were you (I might transfer to them once my year is up with ipowerweb)

1. Try to avoid hosts that you have to pay for one year in a lump sum, go for the month-to-month fees even if they are a bit more expensive. Even if they are great now, they could go belly up one week after you paid for a year of hosting and you'll pretty much be SOL.
2. Keep regular backups of your site, especially if you're running a database.
Other then that it's a good idea to do some google searching on the webhost to see if anyone has any complaints about them.

Well, i know this thread is old, but i have had the worst service with world web hosters. thay have still after a week or so not gotten the domain registered. i didn't know i had to wait a week for dns changes to take effect! :( i also have tried all there ways of "support" but still i am getting nothing. what a damn rip-off!

First you need to decide how much traffic(bandwidth you expect) and what services you need...
I have used many services over the years from simple and cheap shared server packages (like ipowerweb), these are the way to go for low traffic basic web sites.
If you have a serious site and expect lots of traffic, then you will probably need to look at dedicated server(s), these servers as they sound are all yours, no other sites run on them (better performance) and usually comes with complete root access so you can configure it however you want. These servers comes with more bandwidth (typically from 400GB to 1000GB) included in the monthly fee which can range from 89 a month for low level entry machine to 500+ for more powerful machines.
Again what type of setup you get will depends on what your needs are. Be sure and read the hosts Terms of Service agreement, they explain your rights.
Services I avoid based on bad experience
Servepath
host2own
Services I recommend
rackshack.net (dedicated) high traffic, costs more
ipowerweb (shared) - low traffic, cheap
You especially want to check the bandwidth limits and costs and the Terms of Service if you plan on using it to hosts games.
Hope this helps.
