Torque 3D system requirements

by Rowland Bartolomie · in Technical Issues · 05/25/2010 (4:56 pm) · 6 replies

I'm new here and want to really learn about creating games. I have installed the Torque 3D demo but it starts to freeze after 5 minutes. I'm not sure if this is the place to post this but I just need a little help. Also I usually have Firefox open but it still freezes with just Torque 3d demo open. The recommended requirements are-

Windows XP or Vista with latest service packs installed
Dual-Core Intel or AMD processor @ 2.0 GHZ or better
2 GB RAM
100% DirectX compatible nVidia based video card with 1GB or more video RAM
PhysX SDK and Runtime
DirectX 9.0c+

I have-

Windows 7 home premium 64-bit
AMD Athlon II x4 620 processor @ 2.60 GHz
8 GB of RAM
I have a NVIDIA GeForce 9100 graphics card but not sure about the 1GB of video RAM
PhysX SDK and Runtime
DirectX 11.0

Is that a laptop? The GeForce 9100 would be a bottleneck (even the 9400m is far better). How you'd experience it might differ, but outright freeze may point to other issues. Are you using basic lighting? Advanced is too much for that GPU. Are you up to date on drivers (downloaded from NVidia.com, not a computer manufacturer)?

I have an 8800GTS with 320MB RAM, so it's more the speed of the card than the memory which matters. I also mainly use a MacBook with a 9400m, which is just dandy for basic lighting. And that's with Apple's crappy drivers :)

Do you get any sort of diagnostics? If you have any form of Visual Studio installed, you might also be offered to watch things in a debugger. If not, there might be something in Event Manager. It's just T3D, not the whole system, right?

I have a desktop. Just T3D is freezing everything else on my computer gos really fast, but T3D isn't completely freezing. It will go about 30% speed and also slows down everything else on my computer. I don't know much about the specs and stuff on computers, I just know that 8 GB of RAM is really good and I know about my hard drive. I guess I will just buy a new computer. Will the best Alienware desktop with these specs work-

Overclocked Intel® Core™ i7 980x Extreme Six Core Processor at 4.0 GHz
Genuine Windows® 7 Ultimate, 64bit
Dual 2GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon™ HD 5970 CrossfireX video cards
12GB DDR3 1600MHz (3x 4GB) Tri Channel Memory
PhysX SDK and Runtime
DirectX 11.0

*goes dizzy at those would be specs*

RAM isn't as important as it used to be, performance these days tends to be a mixture of CPU/GPU.

eg: T3D runs very nicely on my box with just 2gb RAM, thanks to a GTS250 GPU and dualCore CPU

Try updating your video drivers from the manufacturer's (Nvidai/Ati) site (not through windows ...), and if you're still struggling for a decent framerate, turn all castShadows off on sun, lights, etc.

just gonna chime in.

i havent even touched torque 3d so this is all just assumption. but

"Overclocked Intel® Core™ i7 980x Extreme Six Core Processor at 4.0 GHz
Genuine Windows® 7 Ultimate, 64bit
Dual 2GB GDDR5 ATI Radeon™ HD 5970 CrossfireX video cards

DirectX 11.0
"

is OVERKILL for any and every engine out today, that is probably a better computer than anyone at EPIC or CYRTEK had to make their last games.

your computer specs are MORE than enough to run an engine of today. like above poster said, make sure you have latest drivers. at the very least upgrade your GFX card. but the rest of your computer is more than enough.

Ok. Thanks, the replies were a big help.

Yes, upgrade the GPU. I've done a lot of research lately and have come to the conclusion that a pure gaming device doesn't NEED more than a GPU upgrade. Somewhere in the Core 2 Duo range of CPUs you stop gaining any gaming benefits. But if it's a development device, an SSD wouldn't hurt ;)

(A 980x Extreme is NOT recommended - that's a stupid amount of money to spend on little boosts!)
