Sinking Vehicles?

by Neil Marshall · in Torque Game Engine · 07/05/2003 (11:51 am) · 24 replies

Does anyone else have problems with vehicles sinking into the ground when they're stopped?

Sometimes it only goes in a little bit, but other times my vehicle will be sitting there going down until the tire drops through the landscape. The actual car remains above ground though, it's just one of the tires. Does anyone know what may be causing this?

I tried changing the col-1 object on the tire to be more cyllindrical (It was a box) but that didn't fix it. So now I'm thinking that it's one of the settings on the tires that is doing it, but I'm not sure. Anyone have any suggestions?

Neil,

Sorry, had to get a little sleep time :) You can edit your car setup with the console. My brother is even changing the setup server side. It don't save it in the cs but you can try things without restarting. Bring up the console with ~ and type :

DefaultCar.force = 4350;

DefaultCar beeing your wheeledVehicle Datablock name.

But really, with your .cs and your model and without changing anything, it does works ok here, no sinking. You said you did some minor changes in your engine, what exacly did you changed ? Maybe try your bike with a clean head to see how it's working (?).

I adjusted something to keep the bike upright longer. I've tried it with and without the change. It doesn't appear to be affecting anything. The change doesn't work too well anyways, it's not worth keeping in there really. The sinking has stopped (by adjusting the force), it's just still doing the jittering around on the landscape though.

Ok good, so you got the sinking problem solved. For the jittering, I'll aks my brother as soon as I will talk to him if you didn't solved it and you want. He is really busy right now tweaking his car (his real one, hehe). He is redoing all the motor, hundreds of pieces all around the place, yuk ! It will maybe be only tonight or tomorow so keep us updated if you get it. Or maybe another GG guy will give you a solution.

If I compare your cs with those I have, you have everything really high (all the spring's number, etc ...) but we are working with cars that goes at 140 to 180 and that are doing loops, so it's probably not good setups for a bike and for your game needs. Good luck and have a nice day !

Neil,

Your jitter problem was caused by too much longitudinalDamping compared to longitudinalForce. I just reversed the 2 values and the jitter goes away. Also try to play with collisionTol, this might help you solve the sinking problem without having to put the springs too stiff. I put it at 0.15 instead of 0.1 (this works well ajusting it to see a very little part of the tire sinking so it gives kind of realistic tire deformation).

Like Gilles said, I have no idea why but in our engine with your original files the bike doesn't sink at all. So I can't really help you with that.

Good luck!

Eric
