No longer garage games?

by Infinitum3D · in Site Feedback · 05/03/2010 (8:26 am) · 5 replies

I see the site is no longer GarageGames.com, it is now TorquePowered.com. I understand the desire to focus on your own engine (I own TGE 1.5.2 myself), however, when I joined GarageGames way back in 2001, it was because this was a community for hobby programmers of ALL languages and engines. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE TORQUE, however, I still want to be part of a community of programmers of ALL types.

Is TorquePowered ever going to revive the good old "garage game" site for products other than Torque, or is it forevermore only Torque?

Thanks!

~Tony

Hey Tony! Very glad to see you posting again. Over the past couple years, the site became primarily Torque-centric. There were relatively few discussions and blogs that weren't about Torque. Last year, it was a company wide decision to sunset the GarageGames name. Now, everyone in the company is an InstantAction employee. People like myself and Eric are part of the Torque division.

The site and our Torque brand is going to get an update soon, and you will probably not see any references to GarageGames (logos, print, images, etc). Eric will have more details on this, but to answer your question we are going to be just Torque.

Thanks Michael for the quick reply (as always).

Two more quick questions:

1. Does that mean that the garagegames domain name will be made available again?

2. I think I remember someone saying that the GarageGames headquarters is in Eugene, Oregon. I currently live in Northern California and I'll be moving to Olympia, Washington this summer, so you're definitely in my neck of the woods. How do you guys feel about having someone drop in to check things out? :)

Thanks again!

1. We still retain the rights and ownership to GarageGames. Lou (our new CEO) said that we will not be using it for the company's next game or Torque, but that doesn't mean we will not use it in the future.

2. Well, we would love it. The problem is that the company relocated last year. The Platform (IA tech and community) team moved to Portland, and the product teams (game studio and Torque) moved to Las Vegas.

Wow. Guess I've been gone longer than I realized. Lots of changes in the past year.

Congrats on everything, and I look forward to seeing how things work out over the next year.

Take care,
~Tony
