White Noise

by rennie moffat · in Torque Game Builder · 05/02/2010 (8:43 am) · 32 replies

Hi, @Melv, or any staff, I have started this new thread, beyond my other audio thread as this seems more dire, and I thought the thread title may bring light to the issue.

White Noise, is what all of my sounds make when played. So, that means I have the sound playing, very faintly underneath a mass of white noise. I am wondering if anyone has experienced this before, might have insight into it.

My sounds are triggering fine, I have a channel, and I have tried various settings, looping or non, but nothing works! Nothing gets rid of that white noise. If anyone has any ideas suggestions, please pass them along.

Thanks,
Sincerely
Rennie

Posting more and more threads won't help resolve the issue. You should try to post the product you're having a problem with if you're trying to enlist help from people e.g. provide relevant information.

I'm not familiar with iTGB (I've not worked on it) so I can't really comment on any audio issues.

ok. thanks.

as far as I know tho, I have been building in TGB. anyhow, taking care of other things right now. will look into more later.

Well that makes it more confusing. You're having the problem in TGB? Why did you post in the iTGB then?

They ARE different products.

... and can I ask what all the line-spacing is all about? ;)

I did not. Some one else posted a link to a thread in iTGB with the same issue.

iTGB Post

Anyway, I hope the issue gets resolved if it's a product platform thing.

what would be the process for that? it seems odd that, if it were a platform thing that it is only coming to light now. Also, who is the "man" is this case? Michael Perry?

Hi! I'm also having this problem. Maybe some details would help:
I'm running TGB 1.7.4 on a Mac OSX 1.5.7 (The aluminum non-pro laptop)
I'm using the pausing streaming audio resource found here.
This doesn't happen on my PC build. I use oggs and wavs. I do hear some sounds clearly, when I mouseover on gui buttons, my wav for that plays clearly. I installed XiphQT so I can hear the oggs in iTunes, they play fine in iTunes. And finally, I downloaded and installed the OpenAL installer from Creative .
This is the final thing stuck between me and a perfect mac build. Any help is appreciated! Thanks,
Garrett

hmm so Garrett,
you say you are getting some sounds to work and some to not?

Also, I am on Mac OSX, is Mac the common thread?

I am using TGB 1.7.4 as well,
I use streaming audio, preloaded and non, looping and non and I use only .wav files. All have a huge, distortion, white noise, static if you will when called using basic audio descriptions and profiles.

With the OpenAL, what is that exactly and has it remedied the problem at all or just a potential solution?

@Rennie
Yes, some sounds do work for me, or I should say that a single sound is working. It's a wav that plays a "ding" type sound when I mouseover a gui. Everything else is static-y / distorted
No, downloading and installing that OpenAL thing did not resolve the problem, I was actually listing it as a potential cause, seeing if it set off any red flags for any one else. As far as I can see, this is a Mac only issue. I'm not using iTGB, but from reading that thread, it sounds like people are actually not getting the static / white noise on their iPhones, but still getting it on their Macs.

Just browsing the update/fixes thread, I think I saw some improvements to general OpenAL support on Mac for TGB 1.7.5. Tonight, I guess I'm going to try and port to that to see if that does anything different, but I was hoping I wouldn't have to do that.

Well, I finally found a solution for this. I'm not entirely sure what caused this, or if it is a good fix, I'm not knowledgeable at all on how things work on a Mac, heh. I copied the openal.framework that comes with TGB 1.7.4. It is in engine/libs/openal/macosx/openal.framework, I believe. I right clicked on the application icon (TGBGame), selected "Show Package Contents". Navigate to the frameworks folder and paste in the GarageGames openal.framework that you copied. Load the game up, and all should be fine except wave files. For that, I just converted my wav files to .ogg using an awesome program called Amadeus II. So, I know this is probably a terrible solution for the "old" version of TGB, but at least it might give some insight into what I'm doing wrong. Anyway, I'm going to run with this, as it is working for me at least. Thanks and good luck!
