Crytek Free Version of CryENGINE 3

Well apparently all the engine makers are jumping on the free with royalty license bandwagon.
Crytek is going to release a free version of the CryENGINE 3 with some royalty deals just like the free Unreal Engine.

Yup. If there was one thing that GDC taught me this year, it is that the middleware engine market is horribly saturated. While their presentations were sterile at best and reminded me of an infomercial, their tech is definitely sound. Interesting to see them jumping into the fray.

I am pleasantly dumbfounded by how the market has morphed in the last 2 years.

UPDATE:
Well they are releasing the CryEngine 3 for free, but it's for non-commercial use.
There is suppose to be better licensing deals for indie game releases but I have not seen the pricing.

best part about this though is that unlike Unreal they are releasing the full source code apparently. If nothing else it will provide i fantastic resource for learning

They're easing into it much like Epic did several years ago. It will definitely be interesting to see. They've got some top-tier talent there and it will be fun to see what comes of this experiment.

It doesn't seem like its really full source code. I don't see any D3D code of any kind... it is just not included. It seems like all the game play and core engine code without physics, rendering, or editor code.

Also its interesting to see how, in comparison to Torque, undocumented and lacking in standards their engine code is. There are almost no code comments or function docs... almost every line follows different formatting rules. A side effect of it being a game first and an engine second... neither of these are importaint to shipping a good game.

Still this is a good thing for the community. I'm sure some people will prefer it to T3D.

Spot on Tim, a game first and engine second, i gave this a whirl today, the good points is the player models, animations etc, but all that content would need to be changed, not a problem if you model and texture. the terrain was a pain to get materials to work, still having problems with those, but this engine is definately easier to handle than UDK, especially if your a nooby freelancer hobbyist like me.

The one thing Torque lacks out of the box is good player char, anims etc, this you need to do yourself.
However, the T3D demo, latest one, within minutes you have a terrain, environment , sun, water etc all there and very easily done.

These game engines do offer great tools, but at a price and i think the Cry3 engine would make an exceptional simulator base, you can create literally huuuuge terrains, up to 260 km square, T3D has up to 32 km I think which is well enough lol, gonna play with the T3D demo a bit tho.
