MAX2DTS, MultiRes and 3DSMax 5.1

It is CRUCIAL to have MATCHING versions of MAX2DTS and MutliRes.
Using mis-matched versions will prevent the models from exporting properly.
You may not know which one you have, but the MAX2DTS exporters linked on this site are MOSTLY for Max4. This means that if you are using Max5+ you MUST have the MultiRes from Max4 installed for it to work properly. Needless to say this does not come with Max5.
To further confuse things, Max5.1 will not warn you of the incorrect plugin ID as Max5 would. You can load up a shape using the incorrect MultiRes version and no longer know it.
FOUR DAYS and 2 hours talking to JoeMaru in the chatroom we figured out why the BraveTree Content Packs weren't working for me, as well as any other model I might try to export.
Hope this saves someone some frustration in the future.

The resource . The resource also goes through how to build your own.
I use it all the time and haven't had many problems at all. It works with the 5.1 multires. As far as I can tell if you load a Max4 model with Multi res the only thing you need to do is resave it before you export. You should get an error when loading "Obsolete Data Format".
I run Max5.1 service pack1 and I get the error if the models aren't built in 5.1 compatible Max.
I haven't used any bravetree content packs so I don't know about them.

I gotta version for 5.1 that works pretty good. There are a few bugs in it but it works for the most part. Shiny transperant materials need several images to work and the t2 autodetail doesn't work. The resource . The resource also goes through how to build your own.
