Survival Horror or Co-op RPG

Hey guys,

As I've been learning T3D, I've been aggressively debating on what direction I should go with my game. Either way, I'd like it to be a co-op game where players can join and drop into game play sessions whenever they want.

My two directions are:

1) A Survival Horror which focus' on team based survival. Up to 3 players, each would take part in the role of a character who has his own individual gift. Sensing the demons around them, the other might be able to pick locks, ect. But your primary focus would be to get from point A to point B while working together. The only real catch is there are no weapons, and if there ever was to be, it would be very ammo limited.

2) A Co-Op FPS RPG where you play the role of some kind of collector or agent. You are able to pick from a list of missions, some of them would be secondary and others primary that forward the storyline. Other players could join you from the 'hub' and go with you to the other worlds (mission areas). You would make your way through he mission, defeating enemy AI and puzzles until you reach the end which would be some kind of uniquely scripted boss. After completing a mission, you might collect a skill or some type of rare item or equipment/weapon.

I suppose the two ideas aren't vastly different or unique, but I need a starting point.

The reason I'm listing them here is that I've been beating my head against a wall and I'm coming to the point now where I need to start something. I was hoping I could get some feedback, good or bad, but please be constructive.

Thanks so much guys!
Chris

Sounds good - but how necessary would each of those unique skills be? If they're essential to progress, you'd have to have 3 players connected all the time - or provide AI buddies when there aren't enough players, which, depending on your AI, could be frustrating.

Sold! I still want my STALKER MMO, but this sounds good, too ;).

Hey just on a game play mechanic issue which relates to the style of game. The Coo-op survival horror sounds like an intresting idea. The only problem would be the "drop in and out" of the game as it goes on, it kinda detracts from the story a little I feel.

It would be cool to have a 4 way co-op and once you have started with that team you have to complete a mission/level as that four. It keeps a strong envasis on the "team" and then you could design mechanics like you suggest which bring all four players in.

Just a thought.
