Dynamix is gone...
Godgames has practically kicked the proverbial bucket...
Activision sells off 5 million in shares...although I dunno if that's a bad thing :) ...
Lack of online advertising has caused the demise of many popular game info and genre sites...
What's going on?!?! Is this the future we have to look forward to? A friend of mine said that actually, this is good for us small guys. While I think I understand his reasoning, I'm not really too confident that a broke willy like myself has any better chance than before. Not meaning that I considered it bleak, just that nothing really changed for us. We do have access to more software, resources and tools, its still more or less a battle on so many other levels. I actually think that it would be harder to gain publishers because companies may want to be more secure in who they lend out their monies to, or the amount itself.
Does anyone think it will be easier or harder?

yeah Ammon777 is pretty much right. we are the furture! unfortuantly ALOT of people are going to rack on you for doing so, EX: im a programmer/moddeler (not TERRIBLY great in either one but i make due) right now im working for a company called Totally Software, My friend made the companny and we are working on a game using the Nebula GFX engine (yeah i know its not torque but thats for another discusion) Now making video games... think about it, we are writing fun for other people, and what do we get in return? $$$ which is good but alot of people see it as we are making games ONLY for $$$. My mom sees it as a nucance and while she doesnt openly protest about me programming 20/6 she doesnt like it. But i know different! i know that one day im either going to be part/whole of a huge companny making games and things that better our lifes! Games are just the beggining! theres much more to gaming than fragging a person or gaining a lvl up. its an expreiance! it teaches and develops a person in to multiple molds. it also is a fun way to pass time and increase your reflexes. So i say to you YES we are the future BUT where do you want to take it?

We need more RPG's and real world simulation; remeber Sierra Quest games those made you think compared to the FPS where it is now turning into a mostly all blood and guts and no one is original any more and that is whats turning me off of game's! The only games that I play now are simulation games and the old Quest games from sierra!

We are few and far between my friend.
Sad that there are so few of us who want games that make you think nowadays. No to insult the general populus who buys these crappy games, but what does this say about America?
Geez, it's sad. I want to be part of bringing back the GOOD games, like Sierra and Dynamix, hell even Interplay and Lucasarts used to make!!
REVOLT AGAINST STUPID GAMES!!!

Only game I've seen that fits in that "Genre" is Serious Sam (which confuses me how everyone demands intelligent games, but this dumb as heck oaf of a game comes along and all the game mags/sites are praising it for... being like Doom.)
You might want to look into the current crop of newer FPSes because many are going the tactical route, or RPG route. If Counter-Crap and Deus Ex aren't a sign of what's to come, then I Don't know what is. "Dumb" games are not what make up the majority of the titles nowadays.
As for the games you are referring to, they were neat when "1 path" was immersive and open-ended. Like Myst, when we first saw it we (for the most part) liked it. Looking back, the puzzles were a joke. Confusing, cryptic, and only one way to do it. Not a way to really entice the player to go through the game again, nor to really "get good" at the game. A problem with those types of games was that the person who made it might think it's "logical", but others might be confused. I remember Riven (sequel to Myst) and it's stupid as heck "Frog Puzzle" I Spent and hour or two on it and just dumped the entire game.
God, now that I think about it that was my first (and only) computer game I've bought depending on the reviews of magazines. I ended up picking up Quake 2 and played that 100x as much.
Anyway, I think the "one path is fun" genre is dead and hopefully will never return. As do I hope the "idiot" games like Serious Sam. Games have a long way to go before they have reached thier limit, and dwelling on early 90s gameplay is detrimental to the creative process.

Could you imagine a 8 year old playing Deus Ex?
I mean, it would take someone that young forever to get the basic concepts down.

Another thing is... PC games are usually more complicated than Console games.Could you imagine a 8 year old playing Deus Ex?

The only way consoles can totally replace PCs is if manufacturers make them upgradable and give them multitasking capabilities - But then it would be a PC and not a console. :)

No matter how good a console is, it still has a finite lifespan. There will always be PC games around because people will always have PCs in their homes as they can do things other than play games. People aren't going to be buying X-Box five years down the line, but they are still going to buy PCs.The only way consoles can totally replace PCs is if manufacturers make them upgradable and give them multitasking capabilities - But then it would be a PC and not a console. :)

Ignorance makes people (usually people who don't own consoles) believe the average user of consoles are "age 8". And sorry to break it to you, but Deus Ex is being ported to consoles (PS2 I believe) so please. Don't say something so ignorantly biased on these boards.
We (as customers) have already missed out on too much because of people whining that consoles are "kids toys". No. Consoles are a gaming platform for someone with a brain :) $300 for something that will deliver bad-ass graphics, online play, fun party games (something PC will NEVER have) and good sports games... that sure sounds like a good deal, doesn't it? Well, compared to your "ub3r" pc. It is.
I'd like to see you buy a $300 pc and see how long it lasts you in terms of gaming.
I believe the average user of a console is early 20s (I know Playstation was slightly higher than average because of it's "pop culture" advertising scheme, like the iMac with appearing in sitcoms or as passing lines in television programs or movies. xbox and playstation 2 are really embracing this tactic, just watch a night of new Fox programs and you'll see one or the other mentioned in the way of "I gotta get's me one o' them [console here]!!!111"
Consoles are here to stay, and I feel they will be gaining market on the PC game-wise. The Xbox in terms of cost versus performance is unavoidably the best deal anyone has ever seen (well, I guess that'd go to a Dreamcast at $50 hehe. But for top-line performance...Xbox is king) It's basically a High-end PC in a box for the price of a high-end video card on a computer.
Consoles have shown heads over heels more innovation than PCs. Jet Grind Radio, Parappa the Rapper, Grand Theft Auto... the list goes on.
Consoles almost always get the better PC ports in one form or another, but PCs don't. Why is that? Maybe because of people like you Anthony who are vocal about how "childish" consoles are. Well thanks Anthony!
I've disliked the PC as a platform because of the stagnant design we've seen in many games and the constant upgrading can be tiresome (and costly). Consoles have been willing to take a risk and develop some of the most innovative stuff. Why is that? And... why do some people still enjoy thinking that consoles are kids toys? 'cause kids don't have much cash, and buy them over a $2500 gaming PC?

Anthony, people like you are what crushed the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was one of the first consoles to truly embrace PC ports, and many developers held out (well, main reason being Nintendo or Sony had them by the balls) because it was a "Console". Ignorance makes people (usually people who don't own consoles) believe the average user of consoles are "age 8". I think you've been reading too many computer games magazines. As I mentioned earlier, consoles are nothing more than a PC wrapped in a fancy case. The only difference between consoles and PCs is the companies who choose to support consoles outweigh the ones that support the PC.

Just as an FYI, GTA was NOT a console first game.. it was a PC game first. :) Actually I still enjoy the first version, even with the lack of saving, much more so than GTA on the PS2 [no camera issues on the original GTA!]
And yes, the consoles are pretty cool hardware for about the first six months to a year before their hardware looks outdated compared to a new console or new things in the PC world. Spend your money where you want to.
However, both console and PC gaming have spawned different and unique ideas, some that work great on both systems and some that work better on a console or PC and some that fit the type of gamer than buys a console or PC.
And due to the nature of the PC, it will always have much more adapability to it than any console while. And it will also have the hardware nightmares that consoles do away with, however any bugs that need to be fixed on a PC can be done so in the form of a patch... can't do that with a console. Not to mention updates, upgrades, new features and functionality. Some of that is possible in the future with consoles, but then again the question comes knocking.. where do you draw the line at making a console too much of a PC.
Lastly, remember the consoles are only so cheap because they are subsidized by the manufacturer. MS loses money big time on the $300 it charges for the Xbox, it like Sony, etc. make up the money based on huge licensing fees charged to developer/publishers to get their title licensed to be sold for that console... its why console games are generally much higher in price.
Oh, and unless you have something intelligent to say in response and not just whining about consoles being better, or such and such is stupid or what not. Geesh.
