T2D for Apple's tablet computer (iPad)

Yes I'm starting the thread before the thing's even announced - I'm that keen.
I'm guessing that the guys at Garage Games know as much as the rest of use do about the tablet (ie nothing) but I'm going to go out on a limb and guess that it won't be a HUGE effort to get iTGB working on the tablet.
If it turns out that the thing runs something like iPhoneOS, can we expect GG to support it? Will there be a separate license fee or will it be included in iTGB?

Agreed, bigger screen and more power. Its all us apple fan boys ever wanted.

But I've always had a game idea that was impossible due to the screen size constraints.

Unhappily I'm no apple fan boy ;)But I've always had a game idea that was impossible due to the screen size constraints.

But they could surprise us by having the SDK ready for download right when store.apple.com is back online after the event.
P.S.: I bet 99% of the people who actually want a tablet have to wait a month.

It's a bit early to ask, if you know Apple's history of releases ;)But they could surprise us by having the SDK ready for download right when store.apple.com is back online after the event.

Probably will work out of the box, I wonder however if this throws a monkey wrench in iTGB like if it is required to run at 320*480 or if we can make something larger.gizmodo.com/5457588/mcgraw+hill-ceo-confirms-apple-tablet-with-iphone+style-os

If it exist, I don't think anyone other then big company would have develop apps for it. I could see a lot of the current iPhone apps breaking. Apple would need to give developers time to get their apps ready for it.
Like what they did for 3.0.

My guess is that the soonest it will be ready for sale would be in July or August, for the new school year. I could even see it out as late as October, if it uses the iPhone OS.If it exist, I don't think anyone other then big company would have develop apps for it. What speaks against that is the fact that it is granted that the iPad will be using OS 4, not OS 3 and OS 4 is unlikely to happen before July / August in prep for iPhone / iTouch generation 4 (given there will be generation 4 of them, thats not needfully required as there is a fair amount of people with 3GS already, 3G ones are able to upgrade that year - when put into the light that the iPad seems to be 3G capable too)
And I highly disagree about the time factor. Think of the iPad as "OS 2 - deja vu". The original app store rolled out with only a very small amount of devs having access, similar to how its now.
The OS 3 situation was only required to prevent it from breaking misserably. With OS 2 that was no problem as there was no public OS before. We know Apple so we can be assured OS 4 will have a similar testing phase as apple still enjoys to use the very same constants in a new os just with a completely different meaning than before.
also most games shouldn't break, only smarties who hardcoded the resolution will be punished ;) Thats bad practice on the desktop and just as bad practice on the iPhone, so far just nobody got punished for it thanks to the single resolution world :)
But its known that Apple has requested resolution independent versions of apps from some devs weeks ago, that went around the globe on newspages and tweets, so anyone interested in startout out right away on the iPad has had and still has time to replace 480 & 320 with appropriate screen size gather values ;)

If its really announced today, then chances are pretty good for a roll out at latest by March 15th by Apples normal announce to ramp time.

The resolution is exactly double the iPhone.
Scratch that its 1024*768, I had some wrong info... ; )

Looks like the answer is some sort of yes, It will run iPhone apps double res, or you can go download the SDK today they say.The resolution is exactly double the iPhone.

Downloading 3.2 beta SDK now to test T2D iPhone with it. Expecting excellent compatibility results. Will post after testing

I cannot get a download, I guess they are pretty overwhelmed at the moment. Bummer.

Our we allowed to develop for the iPad, with the current license?

I have to check if the software works out of the box, or if it would require additional manpower to get a version of Torque working on it. My hopes of compatibility are high right now, but it's taking forever to download the SDK.
01/27/2010 (6:22 pm)
@Christopher - We are discussing that in our Strategy Team meetings. It is technically a new platform, so it may or may not warrant a separate license. We do not have any answers at this time.I have to check if the software works out of the box, or if it would require additional manpower to get a version of Torque working on it. I have it installed, I just wondering if I can see how hard it would be to get torque working with it.

SDK, OS and distribution channel are the same.
its not like it is an all new platform. The look (oversized iphone) makes it pretty clear what platform it is ;)
01/27/2010 (6:42 pm)
hard to come up with a way to license technically disallow it as I'm allowed to add a screensize check and dynamic handling according to it and thats all thats required together with setting the platform to iphone/ipad.SDK, OS and distribution channel are the same.

@Marc - Yeah. The thing just came out today, so we have not had a chance as a team to review all the specs and requirements.

Was just a though of mine.
Looking forward to hear about the plans :)
I think its a pretty interesting thing, but with the two main specs missing (gpu and ram) I'm unsure how smart it is to approach it already ... it requires significantly more fillrate to achieve 3GS alike performance on that screen so if it is only the 3GS chip, the performance would drop significantly, with the new SGX it would still be below 3GS but at least not that far

I'm sure demand will be high, but how will this affect downloads for the iPhone? Will the App store be flooded with even more garbage, or will there be a surge in demand for more robust utilities and games? Very exciting prospects, but we are only a few hours past the announcement.
01/27/2010 (6:57 pm)
Indeed. Though it's asking a lot, please (everyone) do not get caught up in the hype machine all the average consumers are. Now is a good time, as developers, to start researching specs, the SDK, potential, and how this will affect existing projects (iPhone). It's more important for our team to get a head start on this. Good news that this is all built on the OS and SDK our engines are currently running on.I'm sure demand will be high, but how will this affect downloads for the iPhone? Especially we need to know what 3.2 in general changes (there are various errors on basic functionality for example, etc)
One thing though thats clear is that the iPad due to the distinct area in iTunes definitely is a very interesting headstart platform.
But headstarting into the wild is very very dangerous.
Apple did a good job at hiding any informations away as the simulator in the current beta is definitely nowhere the real ipad, as it would be worse than the 3GS by the specs T2Di is giving out.

Fully agree that it is now research and testing time, not "hype lemming" time :)Especially we need to know what 3.2 in general changes (there are various errors on basic functionality for example, etc)
