Is The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque book best for someone who has little knowledge of Torque3D.
About the author

Would the book be easier to understand then the documentation?

That's a matter of preference, but the bigger issue is content. The documentation is 100% geared toward Torque 3D. The book was geared toward TGE.

With Mich on the job I think the T3D documentation could surpass The Game Programmers Guide in usefulness for T3D. However, as it is I don't think the T3D documentation gets quite into TorqueScript as well as The Game Programmer's Guide does, as Mich mentioned it can be very useful (well, I say very... he just says useful) for learning TorqueScript.
= EDIT =
To be completely honest I haven't read all of the T3D documentation front to back yet though, either.
Maybe go through all the T3D documentation, and if you still feel like somethings missing maybe pick up the book if you can cheap.
= END EDIT =
Since TGE is included with the purchase of T3D, if you can also afford the book (perhaps pick it up inexpensively somewhere): I personally recommend it!
I would recommend going through the book with TGE, and then you can use the knowledge you gain from the book and playing around with TGE in T3D aswell.
T3D has A-LOT of new things when compared to TGE, but in my opinion going through some of the TGE tutorials with TGE can be useful for getting an understanding of T3D (if your completely brand new to all of the GarageGames' Torque products. - Or am I wrong Mich/Anyone?)
If you can pick it up cheap, I recommend it. For T3D alone, I don't recommend paying full price for the book. (It is the best for TGE! Well worth it for TGE at new or used prices!) In my opinion.

If you do get it, I hope you like it. If you do not like it, I disclaim that this is only my opinion. I do not know what is best for you and T3D.

I do NOT recommend any of the other books written for TGE when it comes to T3D, and as I said The Game Programmers Guide to Torque seems the best to me when it comes to TGE. Though the others can be useful (for TGE) because they do have a few things The Game Programmer's Guide doesn't, but nothing you couldn't do without.
