Any video tutorials for torque 3d?

by James Guard · in Torque 3D Professional · 12/13/2009 (2:25 pm) · 15 replies

I'm completely lost, I need some kind of video tutorial just showing a basic game being created. I got the books on torque I have no idea where to start. Also I can't find any documentation on how to setup a model correctly in blender so torque 3d can read the mesh, lods, and col through a collada export.

There are also a few video tutorials on our Vimeo account which show how to use a few of the tools. I have also been working on a video tutorial series on creating a game, start to finish, using only Torque 3D editors and script.

I bet that series will take some time, huh? Release them one at a time if you can/feel they're shiny enough :)

@steve
thanks for all the links these will help a lot.

@michael
I've already checked all the vimeo videos but I'm still a little lost. Now that video tutorial series your talking about would be exactly what I'm looking for, when do you think you would have that done?

@James - My goal is to get it out before GDC or version 1.2. The series is more than just demonstrating how to use an editor or how to script a new function. It actually fills holes the documentation can and should not cover, such as pre-production, design, post-production, etc. The final game will be a great demo/tutorial, but the purpose of the videos is to show one approach to taking a concept and turning it into a game.

It's been a blast to make so far. Each video is averaging between 5-10 minutes, and I have finished four already.

@Michael
Are you going to be selling this training series? My real question to you is how can I get a hold of what you have already done? I am a 3d artist I don't know if you need help in that department. I kind of need to hit the ground running on my project. If there is a possibility of this we could talk further through email jguard@epsilonstudios.com

A video tutorial on how to use L3DT with T3D would be nice. There are written tutorials on it (L3DT website), but a video one would make things a bit easier. Not on making the terrain, just the export process.

@James - The videos will be released to the public for free, via YouTube and Vimeo. The first four videos are just pre-production:

1. Project introduction
2. Project planning
3. Concept design
4. Research

The next video is on design and will be released with a design document. I definitely need help with 3D art, as that's the only area of this project I am lacking in. I can make use of the stock Torque 3D demos and some content packs, but I will not be able to create any assets unique to this project. I'm not ready to take on any help, but will be posting more about this project later.

@T. John Laird - The new L3DT exporter makes a video tutorial useless. It's just a few simple clicks, then L3DT spits out the terrain file and a simple mission.

I think a few people around here would be willing to pay for some video series if the production level was good enough and it had a lot of information. One of those things that might allow more resources to be thrown at documentation if there is revenue coming back into it. If the price was decent (<= $50) I think you would get quite a few bites at it.

@All - I have contacted 3D Buzz to discuss the idea of a Torque 3D video tutorial series. Their work rocks, and I think it would be a nice addition to our documentation.

My video series has a very focused objective/end game.
