Relevance of available books to T3D

by CheopisIV · in Torque 3D Public · 12/09/2009 (3:35 pm) · 3 replies

I've been a lurker for years(literally something like 10!), always watching the TGE development and thinking of buying a license, seeing Finney and Maurina write their books and wishing I had the time and extra money to get into Torque. This last pricing scheme solidified my decision, so I got the binary license (yay!) but now I need to get into things and learn what I can do.

My question is how relevant are the current books, specifically "The Game Programmer's Guide to Torque", "Multiplayer Gaming and Engine Coding" and "3D Game Programming All in One" to the new version of the engine? If I remember correctly, they were written in the TGE 1.3ish era...will they still apply to much of the T3D 1.0.1?

I cant speak on any of the books except for Maurina's as that is the only one i currently own, but his book targets TGE alot of the material in it is out of date, but there is still alot of useful data, especially on torque script that is still relevent. His book is also useful for understanding how and when to set up nodes, bounding boxes etc for importing art work into the engine. As you have the binary i would think maurina's book would be of some use to you as you will not be working with source code, and the editors are for the most part fairly intuitive, and hopefully more tutorials and documentation will be available to assist in understanding them better. Also consider there has been rumors about a possible T3D specific book floating around...

Thanks for the info. I do plan to upgrade to the Pro license some day, but if it takes me as long to scrape the funds for that as it did for the binary license...well, it may be a whole new engine by then.

Torquescript is definitely on the list of things to learn, as are the rest of the workings, so I may pick up Maurina's book.

A T3D book would be on the want/need list for sure!

I don't know what the status of this is:

Quote:Critically acclaimed author Ken Finney is writing his 3rd revision of his best selling book “3D Game Programming All in One” entirely around Torque 3D.
