Next release when?

by Andy S. · in Torque X 3D · 11/23/2009 (5:28 pm) · 25 replies

John, can you maybe please give some insight on what is coming and when?
What about proper shadowing? Which new features will the 3D editor have? Will it be more stable than it is currently? What about avatar support? What kind of tutorials?

Would be very nice to hear whats going on with TX.

Thanks

Andi

Okay, almost done with the blog. It should go up tonight or tomorrow morning. It should help clear up the direction and current priorities for Torque X.

Ron, the roadmap coming out doesn't really plan to phase out Torque X any time soon. Instead, we're expanding it's reach to other platforms with richer platforms and improvements under the covers. We believe that the structure of the Torque X framework is very solid. Not that performance improvements can't still be made, but rather, we can make those improvements within the core engine and not impact the interface to your game code. New features will be coming in in a fashion similar to Silverlight development, whereby new DLLs will be introduced with additional functionality. So, when you want FEATURE_X, you include that DLL. This kind of separation can also be seen with the split between 2D and 3D. So all those 2D puzzle games don't need to lug around code for terrains and skyboxes.

So, Torque X will not be phased out, but the Tools may. The tools are planned to converge with Torque 3D and Torque 2D to provide a better user experience.

As for the Creator's Club forums, I don't believe they are accurate about this. We are building separate packages between Creator's Club and the Full version sold here.

That would be me on the CC forums, I was referring to David Montgomery-Blake's comments here www.torquepowered.com/community/forums/viewthread/106575

I believe it used to work this way? Maybe it doesn't anymore.

I seriously look forward to the tools being more like the new T3D, that would rock!

Hey Henry...thanks for the update. In that thread, it looks like there is some ongoing debate.

I guess the most important thing to get out of that thread is that Microsoft and Garage Games are both at work trying to get an updated binary to Creators Club members.

I may cave and buy Torque X 2D, but I've been trying to keep my game development spending down til the economy turns around. ;)

Thanks
