Graveyard of dead projects
by DME · in General Discussion · 05/08/2003 (3:19 pm) · 256 replies
I was wondering what happens to people once they do a bunch of work for a project and then it dies.. Do the people just take their work and go to another project?
Reason I ask is because I'm currently working on level design using worldcraft. It has come to my attention that there has to be billions of levels already out there that no one ever uses.
If I take a completed level add my own textures and change it to suit my game is that copy write infrigment. Cause I started with a level then edited it?
If it is does anyone have levels kickin around that they are not using?

Glad to hear that, Anthony, AmFunk is a rocking game idea, and those '70 car ads are just... awesome. I'm a fan.

I like the horizontal one best, not quite sure why :) I agree with Patrice about the colour, though. Maybe more reddish and flamey?
Tom.

It may take me a good minute but I was struck with a sweet idea for an animated logo that would (quite literally) set this site on fire! ;) I'd like to run the concept by you to see if it's got the propper 'glow' and possibly get a rough sketch or something posted within the next two weeks if at all possible :D
As of now I'm still stuck working with pixels meaning you could probably work it a little quicker :P
Or would you like me to post the concept here?! :D

As for the rest of the layout, all you artist type folks have to do is create an 800x600 mockup of a layout and I can incorporate my code into it. I have enough skill with Photoshop to get the necessary parts out of it and onto the web.
If anyone gets a chance, create a image for "Coming Soon" that I can place on a splash page while I work.

Very nice Djagg =) I will go ahead and add it to the site and modify the color scheme accordingly. As for the rest of the layout, all you artist type folks have to do is create an 800x600 mockup of a layout and I can incorporate my code into it. Actually get them to make it at 760x420 Matt, this will allow the page to be properly framed within an browser running at 800x600 resolution. If you go anything larger you will end up encuring the wrath of scrollbars.LOgan

It's geocities, so you'll have to cut-n-paste this anyway: http://www.geocities.com/eforhan/fen2.jpg
Hope you like! Nice work, djagg.

Nothing new on this thread lately, just wondering if this is still in the making. I would love to dig through the dead on this site when it comes to fruition.

I have almost finished the submission process and will then move onto the approval process and then to the browse/search pages. I need to finish out the FAQ, Contact, and License pages as well as flesh out the frontpage. Little slow going at the moment with some other stuff going on but I expect to go public very close to August 1st. There will still be plenty of work to do but the bones will be in place =P

No GPL. If I want to freely distribute my work that is great but I think it is wrong to force others to distribute their work. The ones who comply would have freely distributed their work anyway and the others who would have benfitted from my work will go elsewhere thus defeating the purpose of me freely distributing it. The fact that people go to great lengths to work around the GPL (linked libraries and whatnot) is an indication to me that there is something wrong with its very premise. It is not my intention to start a licensing holy war. This is just my opinion. However, it will be reflected at digitalboneyard.
That said I am open to suggestions =)
Personally, I like Public Domain but that may seem a little too loose for some people. This Attribution license seems to be a good one as well (though the wording is a little off for our purposes). It basically states that you are free to use the "work" however you want as long as you give credit to the author.
What other recommendations do people have? Please provide links.
