Graveyard of dead projects
by DME · in General Discussion · 05/08/2003 (3:19 pm) · 256 replies
I was wondering what happens to people once they do a bunch of work for a project and then it dies.. Do the people just take their work and go to another project?
Reason I ask is because I'm currently working on level design using worldcraft. It has come to my attention that there has to be billions of levels already out there that no one ever uses.
If I take a completed level add my own textures and change it to suit my game is that copy write infrigment. Cause I started with a level then edited it?
If it is does anyone have levels kickin around that they are not using?

I am moving over to MGO's hosting this week. Once that is done I will get back into seriously working on the website (it is frustrating when your ftp keeps cutting out). However, the holiday this weekend means it is unlikely that I will get much done till next week.

LoL, I know how you feel about the FTP cutting out.. It drives me insane!

Ok, I am fully moved over to MGO's servers and I have gotten file uploads straightened out with their permissions structure so I am good to start back on digitalboneyard.com again =)

Awww digitalboneyard.com doesn't work. Must not be registered yet eh? :(

Ok, I purchased digitalboneyard.com and additional web hosting from MGO so now my hard earned cash is on the line. I expect things to move quickly. Any artists have additional artwork or layouts ready to go? All I have so far is Djagg's logo so I am sticking with that basic color scheme and a simplistic layout. These will be easily editable though.

I say go with something usable a clean. There's no point to a fancy website here; people will be attracted to the content, not the way it looks.

Hey..for one moment I was thinking that BoneYard has entered that astral plane of dead itself.:)

Sorting, IMHO, should be dealt with a few ways, by media type (sound, music, textures, models, sprites, backgrounds, document, etc.), by format (.wav, .bmp, etc...), by content description (sound for shoot 'em up game, character concepts, RPG design doc, etc.), and importantly, by author.
Knowing this in mind, submission of anything could simply be done by selecting the appropriate categories, filling in a short and/or longer description, uploading the content/content address, and author's info.
A good option, IMHO, would be an automatic notifier to inform an author that their content has been used or is in the proccess of being sought for by another developer. The developer browsing the media can choose what their interested in, fill in any info they'd like to share about the use of the item, supply their information to the author, and possibly attempt to seek that author to fill a position reguarding the content they selected.
:)
Myself, I'll probably be sorting through alot of my bits and pieces of past projects soon, and anything I'm done with I'll happily donate to the site :)
(Great job BTW Matthew, and Brice for starting the thread! ;)

If the filtering isn't that much of a chore, I would like to see multiple levels of filtering (I know, I ask for so much). So that someone looking for backgrounds could then filter their category search by whatever format they needed.
Just a couple of thoughts. I think having the developers notified when someone downloads their work would be useful. It would let contributors know what is and isn't being accessed and show that their work is important.
Let me know if there's anything I can do to help the site along as I think this is a great idea.

In addition to Christophers suggestions I would think that a subscription system from the other end would be useful. It might be handy to subscribe to a catagory or file format for new additions. It's all driven by db then this shouldn't be too much to code up in PHP or whatever you're using. If the filtering isn't that much of a chore, I would like to see multiple levels of filtering (I know, I ask for so much). Maybe instead of an email notification system which could easily be overdone is just a stats page that an author can view after logging in to see what's going on. Kind of like what you see here on GarageGames.com with resources having score weather it is good or bad. :)

Thanks a ton for doing this for us Matthew! :)

I think it would be a good idea to have the email notification AND the ratings for content. It would be very nice to be able to gauge the quality of the contribution without even havign to download it.Thanks a ton for doing this for us Matthew! :)

Sounds good, i can make some good PHP code to do that.

However, a stats page is an excellent idea and is going in =)
I plan to require you to register to post a resource or to comment on a resource but not to download them (I hate websites that force you to register just to browse them).
A ratings system is definitely in the works but I need to think more on how to prevent abuse.

I think email notification when someone fills out a "I am using your resource for..." form is a good idea but I do think that having an email fire off everytime someone dld's your resource could be a bit overkill (honestly, who would leave that option off ;). I may code it anyway and disbale for the time being. However, a stats page is an excellent idea and is going in =)

Just a suggestion to get things going. This idea has been floating around for a long time so I would suggest getting the site up and running even if it doesn't have all the bells and whistles. Otherwise the intent of the site and scope will creep like mad and we'll be here weeks or months from now still debating what features are in or out.
I would suggest putting together a list of all the features, checking off what's done or could be done quickly (best bang for the buck) and what would be "nice-to-haves" and get the site up and running.
I agree a rating system would be great, a stats page is probably a must from the get-go (at least tracking it in the db, maybe not presenting or doing reporting on it) and email notifications are nice-to-haves.
I personally would like to see and contribute to a skeleton system up and running even if it was just lists and downloads.
Sounds great so far!

After the website is up, I am going to need a few people to help approve submissions. The main intent is to make sure that innapropiate content (read: pornographic or licensed) doesn't make it on but the really eager can also help categorize and rate submissions.

Bil, actually that is the plan...I am going to put a basic framework in place very soon and roll it out. Once that is done I am going to be looking for one or two other webdevs to help me flesh out all the bells and whistles. After the website is up, I am going to need a few people to help approve submissions. Great. Looking forward to it. Let me know how I can be of assistance once it's up and running.

I'm a pretty good PHP(with MySQL of course :) developer, but I kind of suck at actual web design though. My only viewable work is at go.t2n.org (Yeah the site was never completed and then forgotten). Most of my work has been done in house and not accessible from the net.

I would like to congratulate everyone on achieving a 100 post thread that has no skewed off topic, resulting in flame wars, or just generally turned stupid.
