Modeling and Exporting Player, need help.

by Simon James · in Torque Game Engine · 05/08/2003 (3:24 am) · 5 replies

I have over the last week or so been coming to grips with the engine, now it is time for me to do some modeling.

Are there any good tutorials on how to model simple characters, and then how to export them to Torque? I have hunted high and low with no success.

Also does the exporting process, export the textures I assign the model?

I have milkshape and a friend give me a copy of 3ds Max 5 what is the best one to learn with?

I know there is a lot of Question bet I would be greatful for any help.

Thanks

SJ

Simon,

I to am seeking to enhance my game creation skills by learning to model, not just characters but objects, worlds etc..

I have picked up 4 solid (IMHO) 3DS max books

3DS Max 5 fundamentals
3DS Max 5 Bible
3DS Max Character modeling
3DS Max Character Annimation

not sure if the titles are correct, I do not have the books at work.

I have done a pre-read on each of the books and they seem to be decent reference and learning material.

When I find more free time (anyone care to sell some????) I will start looking at doing some simple objects and exporting them to TGE and learning the ropes.

Just a thought, but as for the question of easy to learn, MilkShape is alot simpler than MAX, but also has less functionality.

As for Torque specific modeling, if you want to implement LOD and such with your meshes, you almost have to get MAX! =/

There's also two books by Paul Steed named "Modelling a Character in 3DS Max" and "Animating a Character in 3DS Max". Both are good reads. I think the last two Ron mentioned might be these.

As far as the best to learn with, I'd say 3DS Max, because it's a defacto industry standard, and has functionality dripping from it(you'll need a bib for that). Personally, I could never get how Milkshape did things, but it has it's uses and some good work did come from it, but if you want to get a job down the line, learn Max.

Go to www.3DBuzz.com, join and then download the VTMs: video training modules. A new link will be added to the top left menu under your login name. In my opinion, if the 3DS Max vtm set was to be sold, they'd go for $100s each if not more.
