RTS Grid System

I've worked through the RTS tutorial and have an overhead camera, spawning and basic unit movement working. I'm looking to implement more traditional RTS elements, and need to constrain objects to a grid purely for the purpose of the player placing them in game.

I'd just like an opinion from some of the more senior developers around here. Would such a system be more easily realized in script or code?
