Is marketing you game as "Indie" helpful or destructive?

By categorizing your game as an indie game be helpful or not helpful to your sales?
From a consumer's point of view is an indie game inferior to those games produced by major studios?
If this is the case then when you create a game are instantly at a disadvantage in comparison to other game studios.
The only solution I can think of is to produce a game that is on par with the major studios. Creating enthusiastically satisfied customers will intern give your studio equal praise and it will get the same respect as the other studios.
