Cinema 4D conversion process

by Tim Downs · in Artist Corner · 05/03/2003 (7:30 pm) · 29 replies

I am working with Cinema 4D to create files. I am able to export the files as a 3D Studio Max another format which gives me a text file with the export process. I have gotten Torque to see the files but when I go to bring in the models it not happening. Its just like clicking on nothing. Has anyone successfully been able to bring files made in Cinema 4D into Torque? If so please tell me how? Thanks!

You convert them to DTS using the scripts as discussed in this thread or is it more straight forward now. Forgive my lack of knowledge... but I am only just immersing myself. Can it do animated files as easily?

Has any heard of any progress on a C4D plug for the DTS format? I really don't want to cart my models/animations through different apps to get it to Torque :(

I haven't ever heard of any official news on a Cinema 4D exporter plugin unless its someones personal side project. As such I wouldn't hold my breathe waiting for it to arrive any time soon.

I use C4D for all my modelling needs and here is the process I followed.

1. I switched from Mac to PC about a year and a half ago, had to as TSE still doesn't work with openGL (ie, OS X)

2. I export from C4D using the .obj format (the object format doesn't carry animations so don't even try)

3. I use a simple text editor to change the names of the individual objects within the .obj file. (Cinema removes the numbers off the end of the object. ie, box20 and box100 become box and box1) - don't forget to include a col-1 object and yes this will become col- in the .obj file.

4. For static objects I use Obj2Dts to get objects into Torque.

5. For vehicles I use Milkshape 3D with the DTS plus exporter, here animations can be created. Its not as easy a program to use as C4D, you can't view the animation key frames for instance, but its a means to an end. Recent model exported through this process.

Problems. If you don't use a PC then I don't think any of these tools are available for your use, you could use Blender however. I'm working on an article for the TDN to help increase interest in C4D as a tool for Torque, hope this helps someone.

C4d is a very nice tool, and i have used it to create 3 models so far for my recent game. I create my objects in C4d(untextured) and export them to 3ds. i import them to milkshape and apply my textures there. then i export to whatever format i need for Torque. When its done correctly, they work perfectly.

I also use Cinema 4D ver.9.5 for modelling and I am completely new to the Torgue engine. Might need your help...
