Mandrake 9.1 & SBLive audio problem

It seems that this isn't a rare problem, but I can't find a reasonable solution.
In Mandrake 9.1 my SBLive plays audio VERY quietly. With PCM and VOL set to 50% in aumix, I can barely hear it. I have to turn them both way up to hear the sound, and then it's overloaded.
Is anyone having this problem, and if so, have you seen a decent fix? The only one I've seen includes having to turn off Plug 'n' Play in your BIOS, which is absurd. THen again, if it's a major bug in Mandrake 9.1, there's not much I can do eh?
Thanks

You sure your jack is plugged in the right output?...It's either green or black...Give that a try...

One thing I noticed when I use MPLayer on Red Hat 9.0 is that if I have the volume turned down in it and then exit MPlayer all other audio apps I use (Torque, XMMS, etc...) can only get a maximum volume of whatever I left the setting in MPlayer. If I go back into MPlayer, open a video of some sort and crank the volume all the way up and then exit MPlayer and then go back into the other audio apps the volume can then go all the way up in the other apps. I don't know why this happens, but that's what I have seen, hope it helps.
