How to make a Video Game Help

by Luis Fernando de Leon · in General Discussion · 10/15/2009 (1:29 pm) · 5 replies

Hi, me and some friends whant to make our own video game company, so just a few weeks ago we purchase T3D. We were trying to export a 3Ds Max image to DTS that was going to be our first level. Since this image was our firts level it was 17 million polys big. Well, needless to say this didn't work. While searching for an anwser in the forums I came across a thread were some one explain that in video game development you slice your level desing and build the level in the engine. Cool, that problem was solve. But that got me thinking that there is a lot of aspects of making a game that we don't know about and that are real usefull (some even basic!). So I was wondering if any of you guys know of any good web pages or books that can help us lear the best practices for game development? I already did some research on the web, but I thounght it would be better to ask people with more experience.

Thanks

Well, first thing to consider is that when asking technical questions on these forums, you'll need to have purchased the engine. It's possible that a friend of yours did, though he would have to be the one who asks technical questions, because he owns the engine.

Second, there are a large number of tutorials to help you get started with the engine, and those can be accessed through the online docs located in the Support > Documentation area.

As for books, that's a little harder to say. There are a few books that were dedicated to Torque such as Ed Maurina's Game Programmer's Guide to Torque, and while it is still a good reference for scripting, it was geared towards TGE rather than T3D, so you may run into issues with how the engine behaves here and there (not to mention that the examples in the book are outdated).

My suggestion would be to start reading up on what it takes to create a game in general, and then branch out from there. There is a lot of learning that goes into learning how to make a game, too, so be ready for that.

Games are harder to create than to play, but if you work hard enough, it can be just as much fun.

Thanks for the information! But I think I didn't make my self clear. I am reading the documetation, I was looking for links or books for game developing techniques in general not just T3D. Like I said we just started and we don't know much about the proces. For instance, I just found out in this forums about the game desing doc. So now Im reaserching about that. Thats another basic thing we were screwing up. So thats why I was asking people with more experience if they know of a good sources of documentations that will help us outline good practices for developing games.

I know that this will be a learining proces since we are starting this in a country that doesn't have a gaming industry. So Im just asking for a little help to point us in the right direccion so that we can learn as fast as posible.

Have you been able to get past the compiling process, thats the first step to making a game?

Not yet. We are currently learning how to work with the world and GUI editor. The plan is to make a "demo level" to get an idea of how T3D works. We are finishing GUI and calculate to star scripting and coding by tomorrow or next week at the latest. But thanks for the information! Now we know that we have to give extra attention to the compiling process.

Thanks!

there are alot of books out there on the game development subject and it is a very broad question, as there are many many different facets to developing a game and many many books out there on the subject try poking around on amazon.com and look for game development to see what I mean. I would suggest reading reviews and finding a book that suits your immediate needs, many hear can point you to books on a variety of subjects but you need to be more specific.
