Windows 7 vs XP-64

Hey, I recently buggered up by XP-64 install on my main system, and now I have two choices: I can either reinstall XP-64, or I could install Windows 7 Ultimate.
I'm a power user - I like to micromanage and optimize my system, and I like having the tools with which to do it. I do a lot of development using Visual Studio (normally pure C++), and also play a lot of games, both D3D and OpenGL.
I'm trying to get a feel for what people are using, how they like it, and why.
Thanks!

Also, another interesting problem would be daemon tools. You have 2 choices there, either wait for an update or use another imaging software.

Win 7 FTW ! I'm using it currently, and it works well from high to low end systems. 1 problem i encountered though was my old low end system was using an ATI X1950 and simply put... no drivers... ATI will only support X2xxx and up.Also, another interesting problem would be daemon tools. You have 2 choices there, either wait for an update or use another imaging software.

Vista set back game development for years because no one upgraded to it.
Give me an excuse to get DX11 support in T3D... use Windows 7. :)

I installed the beta on this computer it worked good without problems. i did not mess with to much stuff besides the split screen thing which seemed to not work right as it should split it in 1/2 not 1/3. i am back on xp now as thats just a beta it will not last for ever. To bad i can't do anything with my vista disk. i should of waited or something as it all junk and could never stop it from giving me a blue screen of death every week/month $250 wasted on that.

When I had to replace my sons computer, I bought him a nice new vista box. My old Win XP box boots faster, runs better, and it doesn't nag me with stupid popup boxes asking me "are you sure you want to run this program?". Windows 7 is supposed to be a little better. Until they make the op sys work like an op sys should, (like XP does) I'll stick with XP.

Windows 7 64 bit only has one problem, I had it running on 2gigs of ram when I bought it and I just couldn't use it. Now i might want a super-duper fast computer but you sound like you want the same thing. so just be prepared to get some ram in your rig if you don't already have ~4gigs.
All my programs are running great though, and google chrome is launching off the click which is just f*#@ing awesome!
Microsoft did a good job this time, do yourself a favor, get Windows 7 :)

I am using Windows 7 and torque runs fine. The interfaces can be a pain but it's nothing we wont get used to. @Mike Rowley - Have you even used Windows 7? It destroys Windows XP. I'm on the RTM Version and let me just say that's THE BEST version of Windows. I still use Windows XP at work and every day I say, Why the Hell would I want to use this piece of crap at home. Windows 7 absolutely destroys it. Once you go Windows 7, you will never go back.

But once you learn to write for a multi-account system, Win7 is going to make you forget XP.
(Yeah, cut that crap with log files pooping all over the installation directory, developers ;)

Well, that might be an exaggeration, Stephen. I still prefer OS X for actual work, then port on Win7 :)But once you learn to write for a multi-account system, Win7 is going to make you forget XP.

windows 7 is very resource-intensive, and f@$-ng slow in 1,5 gb

I don't know anybody else using XP 64, so it must be pretty lonely out there for you. All my old stuff still works in Win7U64, it boots faster and it's actually been stable. You won't get DX10 and 11 on XP.
The negative: New interface. MS do this every release. Especially the network settings are a pain now - too many clicks to get to what I need. Too many confusing versions, but of course that doesn't matter for us who got Ultimate for free.
