Internships?

by Chris \"Hobbiticus\" Weiland · in Jobs · 04/19/2003 (9:43 pm) · 17 replies

I'm kinda looking for something to do this summer, and I might as well give this a shot: Are there any sort of opportunities at GG for summer jobs/internships? I know it's a long shot, especially since I live on the east coast, but I'm sure you guys could use a hand with stuff.

Its pretty hard to get internships, the developers I have worked for generaly don't take people on simply because it's too expensive. When you hire an intern they usually have very limited experience, and you have to take someone else away from their work to train them. My irst job in 1997 was as a intern, and I basicly ended up doing sprite conversions for a PC game to PSX. Something that didn't require much experience and left a experienced artist to do usefull work.

However it does help you get a tiny foot in the door, but not much of one. When a junior artist gets paid $20+ an hour and an intern at least $9, it's quite expensive and most developers don't have any money to spare at all. Some PC developers only get paid $9 an hour with experience if they work for small developers located out in the sticks.

Good luck though, if you lived somewhere where there are a lot more companies you would have more of a chance though :(

Chris,

I think being an intern is a great idea. I would suggest contacting the developers in your area and seeing what you can do for them. There is a lot to learn and as long you pose it as a win-win situation they should be interested. Just make sure you show your value to them with your skills.

Chris- Rarely today do internships pay- at all. Unless you intern at a large corporation you almost never get any $ for your time but you do get 'your foot in the door' and something for your resume.
It always really gives you an idea of the industry and if its something you really want to do in the end.

So is Rob Blanchett - aka xgalaxy. And I did it, as well. Loads of fun, if not very profitable...

I would look at internships being soley educational and not getting any money... education is the real key anyway.

I live in Eugene, OR and I was informed that GG was based there. Do they intern with 3d artists?

Garett: You should absolutely contact Josh Williams (although he is on vacation this week, so don't expect an instant reply).

Thanks Stephen! I'll talk to him after I get a little bit on sleep.

It's been a while since I've emailed him and I've seen no reply yet. The email I sent wasn't very well thought out. May have left a bad impression.

Hey Garett. Josh has been pretty busy lately so don't mind him. We currently have a lot of interns coming out for the summer so the place is going to be packed. I will pass along to him that you are interested though.

It doesn't sound like this would be aproblem for you, but some places require interns to be full time students seeking a 4-year degree.

SOE brutally shattered my fragile little ego when I was taking some night classes. I met the then-producer of Planetside, Dave Georgeson (interviewed him for a Game Design paper, cool guy), and we got vaugely pal-y. He tried to hook me up but the bean-counters/suits/instruments-of-Satan shot him down. As I was part-time and not after a degree... Squish.

*sigh*

Foiled again!

I've actually thought about interning at GG, but I figured my skills in 3D Art wouldn't be good enough when I got there... so I figured I'd wait till I think my skill is good enough. Right now, I can model just about anything, and good at rigging, and know the basic's of animations... but my texturing skills suck.

So maybe some day I will:)
