I saw this posted on slashdot the other day :) Its pretty damn cool. Apparently it took 606 takes to get it right.

That's fantastic!

I am betting that alot of that video if not the majority or the entirety of it is CG.

Jarrod: None of it is.

Actually I did some research, and it says it is "almost 100%" practicals, there is some CG tom foolery in there from what I have read.

There are a few places that don't seem quite "right" in it that look "sweetened' but without a completely un-compressed version it would be really hard to tell what is what.

No folks. It's 100% real and all one shot, no editing. That's why it took them 606 takes to get it right. Once again no CGI, no editing, no cheating.

if you single frame thru it there is a cut to CG right before the muffler rolls across the floor.

see this if you don't believe me cheat

it was NOT done in one shot no editing.

Once again there is one second of CG and at least one edit in the advert.

Ya know they might have MENTIONED THAT THE FIRST TIME!

I mean really, why the hell would you do 606 takes and then use CGI in one spot??!?! Why not just CGI the whole thing? Or piece together the mutliple takes?

@JDS - I am right there with ya buddy, seems like a big waste of time to do it all with practicales just to stick a hack in the middle like that.

Maybe that was the best take of the 606?

My understanding of the article was the it was two takes pieces together with one second of CG editing work. So they took the best two takes, one from each segment.

The reason they didn't use CG for the whole thing: Good luck animating that in five months and making it look just as convincing. Plus, it's definately not as impressive if you just did it in CG because you can't claim that it would work in the real world.

This is incredibly impressive. That's all I have to say ;).

actually it is explained the link that I provided why they did the CG sticching and it is not the reason you propose Greg. It was much more practical than that, the studio was not big enought to set the entire contraption up at once.

The wheel rolling up the ramp seems to defy physics a little bit since it changes velocity and accelerates...

The wheels were weighted on the inside with bolts and screws so they would roll up the hill.

The commercial is based on an art piece called the way things go. You can buy the video on amazon

@Jarrod: That's what I was trying to say. :( A segment being a pass with the one set of objects... I tend to be a little obscure sometime with explainations. Sorry.

Dare I claim that Monster Studio's Chain Reaction is done entirely with CG :D
