Freeware: Sonic game

oddly enough, I didnt buy torque to make any money, I just want to make a game... heheh, I guess its a start

Well, Im still very new to it, and modeling, and everything else about Game programming. i do know how to set up acceleration, and deceleration, as well as directional movement, and jumping on paper, I just dont know how to put it into C++... much less so Torque.

I guess this sort of thing just requires tampering for a while, and sticking with it, Im sure that after I look at the source of Torque for long enough that i will be able to figure it out.

Anyway, I do have a website, although it is less than anything fancy, and not very developed yet. http://www.demensionwarped.i8.com

heh, the URL is spelled wrong... Oh well.

Anyway, I have some snapshots of my own personal models there (only a main character, and feet (shoes to be very specific) right now, working on hands, but cant seem to make them less than 700 polys each.

I am a jack of all trades (I model, and program... not program very well yet... but hey, im only 15) and I am very dedicated to this, ive been looking at torque for a while now, and find it somewhat overwhelming... could someone please point me out to some beginner's tutorials?

Oh yeah, and perhaps some veteran modelors could comment on my models, I put a lot of pride into them.

Why not make a Sonic-like game without actually including Sonic? Make a new character. That way you're doing something a bit more creative, and also you won't be sued by Sega.

And believe me, Sega doesn't care that you're giving your game away for free. If/when they hear about this game project, expect your website to be shut down in a hurry, and just hope they don't take it further than that.

Call him Gin.

and make the powerups alchohol bottles.

Then introduce his sidekick Tonic.

Ive looked into this actually, and, Sega wont do anything to me for it. They only care if you sell things, so Im fine. Actually, people have been making Sonic freeware games for a long time... although it was with little toy programs made by the Clickteam company. Besides, its too late to go back now, Im already to far into my model, and it was too much work just to throw it all away.

Hah, trust me, I'd email them before you start anything. One model isn't a big deal. Rather email them and be sure than make an entire game (thousands of hours) and then have it shut down.

I like Ians idea btw..
Good luck, cheers

Jonathan,

Do an internet search for "copyright law" read it and then come back and tell us you'll be ok.

Jonathon, btw, how many polygons is that sonic model? IF you use it, you don't want it to be too high.

And queue the follow up post whining about how Sega is run by capitalistic bastards who should have had the decency to tell everyone to not try and steal their IP.

Sorry, I'm pretty jaded about these kinds of things. They seem to popup all the time.

well... Ill look into it, but no one has ever had any trouble from them yet.

I expect the model to be about 3200 polys in the end, its a LITTLE high, but I think it should still do well on a p3 or higher.

3200 quads or tri's?

That isn't enormously high, but I'm sure with a simplistic form such as sonic you could do a lot of cutting. Note that game model polycounts should be measured in tri's, not quads.
