Modeling a Character in 3DS Max

Folks,

Has anyone here purchased and use the book "Modeling a Character in 3DS Max"? what are your thoughts on it.

I am looking to learn more about modeling in 3D max to broaden my game creation skill sets. I am not willing to just toss out money on a book that in the general publics eye is pure crap.

I have read mixed reviews of this book on amazon and am reluctant to purchase it.

It's an excellent book. Goes through a bunch of different methods for modeling for various body parts. If you go through the whole book you will end up with a pretty diverse methedology for attacking character creation. It's also writen by one of the best in the industry, Paul Steed. He has a second book now on animation, which is also very good. He does put a little of his personality into the book which could aggrivate someone I suppose, but I liked it.

I have the book. I haven't had the time to go thru the entire thing and learn to model, but from the reading and skimming I have done, it appears to be a great book.

Paul Steed's modeling book is actually pretty good. It covers a little bit of everything that you might need for modeling a character. It is kind of tedious at time to read through, and there are spots where he doesn't explain *why* he did something, but, overall, a good book.

His animation book, on the other hand, is a mixed bag. He does cover charater animation for games, but it is based almost entirely on using Character Studio. If you use Character Studio for everything, great. But, if you're looking for a book on animating characters for games using bones or another 3D package, look elsewhere.

Excellent book Ron. I liked it because he has a complete tutorial from the very beginning incorporation of the drawing, to the completely mapped and textured character model. I'm not a fan of books that throw a hodge podge of tutorials in that are relatively disjointed. I always end up asking myself "OK, Now what?" With Steeds book, there were no remaining questions for me.

Ron, I think the book rocked, and his methods can be applied to other apps as well. The only thing I didn't like was the texturing, but Max does that really funky, as opposed to what I'm used to in trueSpace, so I can't blame Steed for that. He's also got a book on animating characters in 3ds max that just came out.
